best 24" monitor for films and late-night reading?

I have a 24" Dell A03 and I love it in every way except sexually and in the factor that it's too bright. All my windowxp are in high contrast black background, and in the evening it seems to be more like glowing grey and a bit of an eyestrain.

I really want to mod the monitor electronics with a resistor on the backlight power so it has more adjustable backlight, but then it would probably be holding together with blue tack. Is there a 24" monitor which is also good and can do better dark blacks and more adjustable low brightness than the Dell? Thanks!

Can't you lower the gamma, brightness or contract more through the advanced settings for your video card?

Catalyst Control Center has separate settings for Desktop & 3D and you could save them as profiles.

thanks, the graphics card settings are really useful but the monitor is still a bit closer to bright grey than black in the evenings

Not sure if it's any good but the samsung monitors have a button on the monitor that automatically changes the settings to optimize it for different uses.

I don't notice enough to bother changing it though.
