    Switches

    Hi all,
I now have 20meg broadband (nominally), and need a switch so that my two housemates and I can all use it. We don't want wireless, so i'm looking at 5 port switches on SCAN. Basically we want something fast to make the most of the connection, but I can't really tell what will be faster that what else!
    I'm looking at:
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=421262

    Please advise!
    Cheers

    Re: Switches

That Asus one would be fine for what you want. Just doesn't have Gigabit ( 1000MBs) ethernet..which isn't a problem if it's just being used for the net.

    Re: Switches

I bought an 8-port 3Com gigabit switch with 9000byte jumbo frame support.

Nice to have gigabit for network backups etc.

Also nice to have 8 ports over 5 - bit of breathing room.

    Not available from SCAN though.

    Re: Switches

If you're planning on plugging the cable modem and PC's into the switch then it ain't gonna work as you're thinking, you need a router in order to share the connection.

You could run ICS on a PC but then that PC has to be turned on for the others to get internet access.

Something like a Linksys WRT54GL would do the job very nicely.

Well spotted burble, potential gotcha there.

    Re: Switches

you could just use the cheapest access router you could find and have a gigabit switch.
Depends how much you treasure your intranet transfer speeds.

    Re: Switches

Thanks for pointing that out burble - exactly what I needed to know! Funny, I told the Virgin Media guy who checked out availability about my plan to plug a switch into the router to share the connection and he said it would work...

    Re: Switches

    thats what i've got
    its not a bad router.
Sometimes the configuration page can be a bit of a pain, as its a bit unintuitive.
try one of the LinkSys ones

This may well be fixed on a newer firmware of install software version. It was about a year ago i did this.

Seems to be working well from what i can tell since then

You can plug a switch into the router but it isn't a router that Virgin Media give you - it's just a cable modem.
