    Thermalright HR-07 owners

How easy would it be to bend the heatpipes on them?
Got a modding project in mind

    Cheers!

The heatpipes on them are already squashed pretty flat, so i reckon they wouldnt bend without kinking - Ooooh Matron.

I had these on some Team RAM, thats how I know

Well if it kinks, the liquid wont be able to get through when it heats up, so not much point in using heatpipes?

    What are you doing anyway?

The liquid turns to steam and rises, it'll get through
Hell, water will get through anything.

I want to buy something like this

    But cant find them anywhere

but because the heatpipes are pretty much flat, the slightest kink would trap the liquid, and if you look at the ends of the heatpipes, thats how they seal them, by squashing them flat (maybe glue or solder as well )

Steam? I'm guessing its not a PC then? I think for the heatpipes to reach 100c to make steam, the heatsink would have to be hotter wouldnt it? That would mean the CPU that is heating it, would be hotter still? So that rules out any modern CPUs.

    Is it a cauldron?

Suspected that it might break them. Ah well, to find another way
As for the heatpipes, it depends on the type.
Some (like the Xbox 360) use a liquid (not nessacerally water). Not all boil at 100c. Alcohol based liquids are usually much less.

Then there is the wick type, which, surprisingly use a wick to move any liquid around. Advantage is that these can usually work either way up

But anyyyywayyyyy, think im going to be best finding an old HSF I can rip to bits

    Cheers mate

    Re: Thermalright HR-07 owners

Umm clunk, Agent is correct about the steam.
Heat pipes work by haveing liquid inside that gets boiled at the hot end and condenses at the cool end, takeing the heat with it.
They don't boil at 100c becuase the liquid is often in a low pressure environment within the pipe which lowers the boiling point.

Kinks would still be a problem because it would disrupt the cappilery action of the internal structor
(they are often not smooth tubes inside.)

Agent if you needed a heat pipe bent through 90degrees it might be cheaper to buy a cpu cooler and cut off the fins.
Or at least practise bend heat pipes.
Never tried it my self although I'd love to know how you get on

I know how heatpipes work, but he said water and steam, and I was being pedantic

Sorry Clunk my sarcasm-o-meter must be broken

And it is fully possible for a heat pipe to use water (distilled) at low pressure below 100c as it will still turn into steam.

See I too can be a pedant.

PS Agent if you do find a good source for heat pipes in packs like thoes pictured, please let us know where you got them from.
As I for one would love to have a play with heat pipe modding.

They are also usually in a vacuum too, which helps the entire thing

Think im going to talk to some US suppliers of these pipes and see how much it would cost to get a few shipped over

    Cheers lads

Heat them up and you should be able to bend them without them kinking as much.

Yeah with normal ones, but the ones on the HR07 are flat which will make it harder
