    Hdd problem?

My dad bought a maxtor hdd to put in an external hdd case and use as backup. Thing is as soon as he tries anything with the drive the computer crashes - but as soon as you pull out the drive the comp suddenly works again!

If he has it plugged in from the beginning the comp won't boot, but then same thing, if he unplugs, it continues as normal.

Any ideas what can be causing this? We've also tried it on my comp and it seems to work fine.

    Cheers.

what kind of external case it is?

Have you tried the drive in a PC without the case?
