    PC shutdown

Can anyone suggest a solution for this one please?

PC (AMD 4000, Asus A8N, Radeon 800XT, 275Gig HD, DVD drive and a 1G RAM) has been working fine for years.

Got a reminder to update the free version of Zone Alarm (I have used the free ZA for years on this machine and have updated it with no probs before). All seemed OK until I got to the point of ZA saying to complete the update the PC should be restarted.

After the restart the Windows XP screen with the blue moving dots appeared, but it got no further. No matter how long I left it, it never got past this screen.

Pressed reset and went into Safe Mode – no problems. Uninstalled ZA by using its own uninstaller, checked Add/Remove programs to see that it had gone. Used CCleaner and Easy Clean to clear any left over registry entries.

Without ZA the PC booted normally. Tried a fresh installation of ZA, but the result was always the same.

As there seemed to be a problem with ZA, I decided to used the free Comodo firewall instead, after unistalling ZA. Installed it with no problem. When I rebooted it got to the XP screen with the blue dots, but after about 15 seconds the PC closed down. Every time I tried to reboot the same thing happened but it would boot into Safe Mode OK.

Did a system restore – this took ages – and booted again. Booted normally, and things looked OK, but it shutdown after about 5 mins. Rebooted and ran Speedfan. Temp1 about 39C, Core temp about 52C. Again it shutdown after about 5 mins.

Thought the problem may be with XP so rebooted and went into the BIOS. BIOS showed CPU temp as about 41C. Again after 5 mins or so the machine closed down.

    Any ideas please?

    TIA

Have you tried using the Windows XP disc's repair option?

It probably would be the best way to go (if you've got the time and patience) but I'm not sure where Norton comes into this.

If you hadn't done a Windows restore, I wonder if reinstalling the old version would have worked as before? Did you completely uninstall this version before installing the new one? It sounds like ZA didn't fully uninstall and after installing another version / product it caused a major conflict. In Safe mode, these processes obviously didn't start and caused no problem.

    Re: PC shutdown

I strongly suspect a damaged system registry is the cause of your problems, possibly linked to a bad .dll file that both protective programs used. A repair install is the best way forward for you IMO.

    Re: PC shutdown

If you are using a router with a firewall then there is no need for another dedicated firewall such as ZA. The windows one will be fine. imo ZA is almost up there with NAV from my experiences with it.
