Router/network card problems!

Hey guys I (well my friend actually) has been having problems with her laptop. Her family recently got DSL so she got a Linksys router and a network card which is supposed to be compatible with her computer. The problem is when she plugs it in white lines go across the screen, and it freezes up and she cant get it to run even by unplugging it, she had to reinstall the whole O/S and everything several times and no matter if she has the software for the card installed before or after that same thing happens. I will be posting in a few days with all the specs hopefully but I figured maybe you guys would have some ideas and we would have to go through the transition as our schedules conflict and she needs it often.

Can she take it back?

I presume it's PCMCIA type network card?? - she then might try using a USB NIC instead as this is likely to be more compatible.

Like I said I really dont know yet, I'm not trying to shoot down your suggestion, at all, I really appreciate it. As far as what she told me, the ISP told her it was compatible and it is supposed to be compatible, but again I'll get all the info, or possibly the laptop and then give you guys the full info. Thanks much!
