Why avoid Maxtor?
("****", thinks Shooty*, "I've got two 300gb maxtors in my rig!")
Was toying with the idea of replacing one of them with a 500gb Samsung (recommended by CustomPC magazine). That would be my game HD, to try and speed launch times.
From general experience around these boards Maxtor have higher failure rates than other drives atm. Also there have been some compatibility issues with their NCQ (although to be fair I've not seen anything recently).

so is this is the best 500gb out at the moment? seems cheaper then the seagate 7200.11
Was wondering this myself but ended up going for the Seagate simply because of the 5 year warranty.
Initial numbers for the Samsung F1 looks very promising - but I they are not widely available in the UK yet (and I think the first drives will come in 750GB/1TB). I am going with my previous suggestion of WD AAKS for a more widely accessible drive 500GB performance drive. Personally, I went T166 for my last two storage drives because it is slightly quieter, less power hungry and probably still in the top 2-3 place in performance at that capacity. I don't really believe that a particularly brand these days are more or less reliable than another, Samsung happens to have a good product now, but I wouldn't call them the 'best' or 'worst'.
The Raptor is about as 'redundant' as a 8800 Ultra. Make no mistake, it's still the fastest money can buy [without going SCSI/even less cost effective SSD]. Unless you only look at sequential transfer speed (in which case you might as well go RAID-0 with 4 drives). I agree that it's not good value, and it's pretty pointless as a storage drive. But it's not horrendously power hungry or hot, and while it's a louder than the AAKS/T166, it's does not compare badly to drives prior those two. Frankly speaking, if someone asked me to build a £2k machine, I will most like include one.Originally Posted by Dreaming
I'm going to have to disagree. A 2k machine would be better off with two 7200.11 in RAID0 configuration if (game) performance were the only issue - and apart from some very specific applications, only games would be worth spending that amount of spondoolacks on.
Oh no, not RAID vs Raptor again!!!!
RAID is only good on flys and stuff. You need a shotgun if you've got raptor problems.

I'll get my coat.
One question. on my pc i have currently ran out of space to install a new hdd but i have lost of spare 5.25 bays at the top of my chieftec matrix full tower.
can i use this caddie and put it on the top of my case?

j.o.s.h. how about this:

ahh cool looks alright. cheap too as well
Nah, you want one of these so you can chop and change hard drives as if they were floppies. Remember SATA is hotswappable.
*Shudder* - to me, it's a bit analogous of 8800GT SLi vs 1x 8800GTX/Ultra. The two 8800GT will perform better under the right circumstances, but the GTX/Ultra will perform better in all other circumstances. RAID-0 advocates believe they will often run into circumstances where RAID-0 will be more beneficial than a faster single drive. I happen to disagree it is the case for hard drives, although I would go 2x 8800GT over 1 GTX for graphic cards if it was the two options that I have (my budget would not allow ). That's not to say I do not recognise the performance benefit of RAID-0. The majority of the time, I find the difference between single and RAID-0 to be negligible (yes I am aware how much faster Windows start with RAID, or how much faster it is for video editing, but I do not reboot my system often enough, nor spend days working with videos - and I simply have yet to see any games provide that sort of performance improvements over a single drive), but has to be said that the performance is there. But, it's not like you can't strip two Raptors (being there - fun experiment, but didn't miss it after I had to return it to the rightful owner), and I am quite certain that it'll do better than two 7200.11 (just like 2x GTX will beat 2x GT); no it's not good 'value' but if you are in the performance domain that's less relevant.
Plus, the reviews I've seen so far regarding the 7200.11 (not many) shows very impressive sequential read/write but somewhat average application performance. However, to it's credit, it allegedly has a very outstanding NCQ implementation (someone on Storagereview reported that - I've not really seen other reviews regarding that aspect). Incidentally, it's probably not something you would be too concerned about if it is just a PC used for gaming, but it is what differentiate it from it's competition IMO.
will two 7200.11 in raid0 out perform a single raptor card
