Mouse pointer speed control in Windows

Is there any way to have greater control over mouse pointer speed in Windows (XP) other than the control panel > mouse > pointer options > speed slider bar? I'm trying to get to grips with a new mouse which by default moved a lot faster than my original mouse. Thing is, the speed I want appears to be somewhere inbetween two of the slider positions available; one feels too fast and the other too slow, and somehow i'm kinda sensitive to it.

Is there something like a registry entry that can be edited for greater control over the speed? Or anything else like additional programs etc that could help? Thanks.

You've not stated which mouse you're using. Is it a Logitech where it uses additional software? If so, load up SetPoint, go to the "mouse movement" tab and adjust the pointer speed there. Again, stating which mouse you have would help
My only concern is should I hide my true identity? A costume maybe?

0iD: Plus weeing in it every now & again does it good
scaryjim: 10" is just a little large to hold comfortably in one hand, which makes it a lot harder to tap, swipe and generally interact with.

The TweakUI component of MS Powertoys for XP has a speed slider for the mouse, which may be more sensitive/accurate than that built into the OS, as you can postion the indicator between the speed points. Also, it's a per user setting, which means if you have more than one user, you can set it to each users preference.

Even if it's not right for your mouse needs, it's really worth having installed (if you haven't already).

    Hope this helps.

Re: Mouse pointer speed control in Windows

As said above, use the mouse's drivers/program to adjust it

Re: Mouse pointer speed control in Windows

it's an MS Wireless Intellimouse Explorer 2.0, old one was a (wired) Wheel Mouse Optical 1.1A.

Tweak's UI's speed settings looks like it's for right click menu display; there's no cursor movement related settings there.
And the only driver/program for it is window's inbuilt one (albeit an intellipoint optimised one, uninstalling it may give me more options but i lose extra buttons...).

I have found a few registry settings though.... ActiveWindows -- Extra Control Over Mouse Speed
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Mouse\ MouseSpeed, MouseThreshold1 and MouseThreshold2 have something to do with accelaration, but MouseSensitivity is what I've changed. By default it seems to go through even numbers, 0 - 20, with 2 feeling a lil slow and 4 to fast. So I changed it to 3, had to reboot for it to take affect (god bless windows), and then.... BSOD! arrghhh....que me praying that it was my hitting of new-wireless-keyboard keys during boot that did this, hit reset... black windows last known good config screen, start normally... ... ahh thank god for that. So, all in all, will i be touching the registry again anytime soon? Hmm...

Seriously though, can't really tell if 3 is any slower than 4. it's deffinately faster than 2 though. And it feels more natural. Maybe I just gotta get used to having no wire pulling the mouse back down the desk.

edit: ok the tiny number of results google's giving me for people using odd numbers in mousesensitivity ain't filling me with confidence.... could it cause any major problems? as i say, it may already have bsod'd me once...

edit2: changed to 4, couldn't tell much difference, regedit back to 3, reboot, no bsod this time and now it does feel a little slower i think...
