    160Gb HDD's

want a new drive for my shuttle - seem to have narrowed it down to these 2 - both from komplett at v reasonable prices

    a. Samsung SpinPoint P80 160GB 8MB IDE ATA/133 8MB cache 7200RPM
    or/
    b.Western Digital Caviar 160GB IDE 7200RPM Special Edition 8MB cache WD1600JB

what do you think would be the best bet, or are they too similar to call?

Samsung hands down. I have a 40GB version, very quiet but also quite fast. Haven't had any problems with it at all.

Also, lots of good reviews about Samsung drives about.

    160gb maxtor tbh
ive got the sata version. very quiet + fast, also usually one of the cheaper drives... if not, id get a samsung - heard some good reviews about them. also i would never buy a drive without FDB bearings due to the extra whine niose... well thats the WD chioce gone

Personally I think that 2 products that are as similar as these both by good manufacturors, the speed differences are probably going to be negligable. You may see a slight difference in some fancy benchmark test, but will you notice it in RL applications?
