Its getting hot!

Hi all,

I have just completed my first self build, using a Q6600 with a Ninja Rev B heatsink (fanless at the moment). I hit the power lastnight and all was well until I noticed my CPU temp started creeping continuously higher reaching the lower 70c levels. I shut down everything as a result.

I am almost certain it is because of my installation (or lack of) the heat sink. Has any one else had problems with this heatsink or can someone offer me advice on getting the remount right? I am using Arctic 5 and I have bought some Isopropyl to clean off the initial failed application.

I found the push pin system for the 775 socket very fiddly and was thinking of ditching it and using the Sythe universal socket adapter instead.

passive isn't really advised with a quad core.. because they generate such large amounts of heat.. do you have the stock Intel fan? you could try using that if you do and see what your temps report as after that..

The Scythe Ninja comes with a fan that I will probably attach this time around. The stock cooler may not be enough to deal with the overclocking I have planned for later though?

I would prefer to get the Ninja Rev B in place, straight off, rather than deal with the hassle of trying the stock and then the Scythe again.

yeah.. but it could be a problem with the chip reporting a high temperature.. you should get around 35 - 40'C idle with the stock fan.. but if it's reporting much higher with that aswell i'd reckon that you have a problem with the chip..

overclocking doesn't just happen, you have to try all of these things.

My test for the ninja being fit is to fit it with the motherboard out. Then pick the motherboard up by the ninja (carefully , over a bed or something). If it falls off you know it's not on right

The push pins are easy once you get the hang of them. You want to set them up before you start so that all you will need to do is push them down (take a look at the looking mechanism and that will make more sense) and then line them all up softly, make sure they are all pulled out as far as they can be before you try and push them down, then push them down at opposing corners.

It's not the easist thing in the world but once it's on it won't be coming off.

Im currently running a quad Q6600 with a slight overclock to 3ghz and its at 22c in a warm room (using a Thermalright Ultima 90 w/Noctua 120mm - 1200rpm fan & AS5).

Is that reading using Coretemp?

Core 1: Idle - 23 degrees Load - 34 degrees
Core 2: Idle - 23 degrees Load - 34 degrees
Core 3: Idle - 21 degrees Load - 35 degrees
Core 4: Idle - 24 degrees Load - 36 degrees

I think you may have fitted the HS/Fan wrong....although, what motherboard are you using. My x975 used to read the temps at 70 degrees+

uGuru is more precise than Coretemp. In fact...touching the die with you finger and having a guess is more accurate than Coretemp.
It takes it directly from the bios.

uGuru doesn't show the cores. Neither does the BIOS.

I take whatever is reporting the highest whether it be the bios, coretemp, everest etc... safest way to play it.

Good policy, unless you use something like speedfan which always shows 127.
