Again, with the graphics cards the fan only really spins up when in games or doing some intensive 3d rendering so usually they are next to silent. The stock coolers on these things is supposed to be pretty good so i wuldnt worry about going passive. 8800GTs are very good cards but they dont offer quite the same multimedia package. If gaming is primary ahed of multimedia, then i would agree go for nvidia.

ive just bought a 3870 and saved about 40 quid. hope i get good performance!

I think the only problem ATI cards have had sinse the 8800s is most games are built around Nvidia cards. As the market seem to be taking ATI in a little more nowerdays things may start to change. Look at the benchies for world in conflict (i think) the ATI card trashes nvidia!
