most people have to take the motherboard out to put thse bigger CPU coolers in anyway, especially with the space some people get when the CPU slot is close to the top left of the motherboard with a power supply and the back of the case being right there..

i can imagine it'd get fiddly.

and a backplate can only add to the stability really can't it?

    Re: CPU Cooler?

Well... i haven't started using my antec p182 yet... still using some generic sunbeam samurai... which i actually have stuck loads of antec fans in with an antec controller. so it is very quiet but it feels cheap ... i just got my assassins creed i need my other orders to come so i can decide on the final pieces

    Re: CPU Cooler?

The Scythe mine is large and heavy untill you see some of the other highend coolers, then you realise while it still is big, it's not that big or heavy.
It's about mid range size wise and a good price.

    Extremely quiet
    Very good cooling
    Under £25.
PS Blitzen you missed; Very easy to change the fan.

Very quiet, fairly compact in height (helps airflow to the rear fan) and did amazingly well in the Hexus LGA 775 roundup in thermal performance. I'm very happy with it's overall performance, though I've got the slightly older model that screws in rather than using push pins.

Biggest downside, it has a backplate so you have to take your mobo out to install.
I didn't think the new version with the push pins uses a back plate.
That said for small cooler the push pins are good but for something the size and weight of the big thypoon I'd be far happier with a back plate/bolt through.
I've also never quite understood peoples objection to removeing the motherboard to fit one.
With most of the big coolers that use bolt through kits you really need to get the motherboard out to give your self the room to get a large cooler seated, I'd never try to mount one insitue inside a case.

    Question Re: CPU Cooler?

Anyone use Xigmatek? As in the Xigmatek HDT-S1283 (currently about £18 Scan Today Only, usually £22). Reason being, it got a good review recently (can't remember where, will try to find out), beating more expensive Noctua and ThermalRight stuff.

But I'd never heard of them before this year...

    Re: CPU Cooler?

There test setup is very good, however if you read the review of the ultra-120extreme you see that they used a differnt fan, the sample they had a curved base and when they tried to lap it flat they dropped it
Calls into question there general ability.

    Re: CPU Cooler?

The scyth use pushpins dont they... friggin hate those things!

I much prefer to take out the motherboard and fit a decent mounting system. You onlyhave to do it that one time and it avoids the inevitabel ball ache fitting big HSFs with pushpins if you ever change CPU or want to repaste etc :@

You sure? 20 is VERY low for 3.25ghz.
    How are you loading it?

    EDIT:
I just saw the link in your sig. How did you manage to max out a Q6600 for the test?

I have tried and cant max all the cores.

    How are you loading it?

    EDIT:
I just saw the link in your sig. How did you manage to max out a Q6600 for the test?

I have tried and cant max all the cores.
well it's only running at 2% usage while i take the idle temperature (sat for 5 minutes doing nothing)
and it was about 18'C in here.

use 2 instances of orthos and set the affinity of each 1 to run on 2 cores and it'll max the processor to 100%.

running on small FFTs is the best for generating the most heat aswell..
