But I read somewhere, for desktops they are not worth the extra cost...
Oh really?
What about the firmware thing, they are orientated towards servers arent they, what if it doesnt work?
Theres a Seagate ST3250310NS 250GB Hard Drive 7200rpm SATAII *32MB Cache* - OEM for sale at £48.
Should I go for it?
If you say it will work on a desktop environment, (which you seem confident on ) then would be worth it?
Thanks a lot for the help
what is the benefit of such a drive to you?
erm thats sort of what i want to know, it was recommended by people on another forum and scored some tasty results on a test.
and considering the hard drive i want for my build is only like a few quid cheaper, i thought i might aswell go for this one as it has a higher cache and is much faster which will improve system performance.
my only concern was that its a server orientated drive and whether it would work as a main drive on a desktop rig.
500 GB Western Digital WD5000AAKS Caviar SE16, SATA II, 7200 rpm, 16MB Cache, 8.9 ms £43.99 £51.69
Why not get a drive double in size for 4 quids extra.
Server drives work fine on a desktop, may be 1~2% slower than desktop drive in single-user usage, you're not gonna notice it.

dont need the space, i barely use 80gb, so im looking for performance over size really, minimum 250gb
Get the 320gb single platter drives then... they have the best performance for SATA 2, 7200rpm drives at the moment...
