    PC Speakers... recommendations?

Hi I'm looking into buying a new set of speakers purely for music and gaming. I've come across a few recommendations but I'm mainly looking at the Philips amBX Premium kit. I've found them on Play.com for £170 and with them you get 2.1 speakers and wallwasher with ambient lighting, fans and a wrist rumbler. Just wondering if anyone has tried them, they seem to be really cool and I think they can take gaming to another level, which helps since I'm a gaming enthusiast!

    Re: PC Speakers... recommendations?

I have a Philips TV with the Ambilight at home and lighting system is really good and really makes a difference to atmosphere in movies and games.

I've heard good things about the sound quality of those speakers too, but if you want more power and clarity then the Logitech Z-5500 is the best out there, but for general use I guess you would be more than satisfied with the Philips and the colour lighting.

But letting us know if you're open to suggestions for 7.1/5.1 setups, or limited to 2.1/2.0, would help as well?

This is the crucial part...the best 5.1 speakers are probably the logitechs: http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=280819

they also do a 2.1 set here:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=280825

or if your budget allows you can buy a seperate amp and speakers if you are a serious audiophile like me

    Re: PC Speakers... recommendations?

I'm willing to spend around the £200 mark, I have looked at the new Logitech ones as you've recommended, but I believe the Philips ones will add more than just sound.

Saw the technology over at ambx.com and at some exhibitions.

Yes the Philips Ambilight is brilliant, anyone who hasn't tried it definitely should have a look at them, they make the screen so much more comfortable to look at and adds a lot of atmosphere to your room. I think they will make great speakers.

Please consider getting nice headphones too. Because no matter how good your speakers are, good headphones are a GREAT purchase too.

    Re: PC Speakers... recommendations?

The ambx stuff is actually really good. The speakers are loud, clear and good sound quality. The fans, the lights and the rumbler, most definitely add something and is very different to anything you're using at the moment. Considering how much speaker systems, fans, those kind of lamps are seperately...you could do a lot worse.

Any of those that haven't tried it, just find somewhere where you can have a bash with it. It'll surprise you.

    Re: PC Speakers... recommendations?

I would personally pick up a second-hand AV receiver (Yamaha, Pioneer, Okyo etc) for around £75 and some decent shelf speakers from richer sounds or 2nd hand.

You could possibly get a 2.1 system for £200 that would knock your socks off compared to that Philips set you mentioned. Plus it has multiple inputs and is easily added to.

Otherwise, get a really nice set of headphones, even with a £2k sound system I still use my headphones more then my sound system when gaming.
