Oh.. ok, what makes them better over any other double platter drive? Also this applies to all manufacturers of 640's aswell i take it.

    Just learning

The bigger the platter the faster the drive... the biggest platters at the moment are the 320gb platters...

Samsung use 334GB platters, not 320GB, and WD use the same on some of their drives now.

I know, but same thing really, as they only use 320gb of the 334gb for the 320gb and 640gb drives...

    Hey Peter,
I've been looking around for those 320GB Spinpoint F1 drives for ages, but nowhere has them in stock.

Where did you get yours from?
    David.

    Re: High density platters! Yarrr!

I just bought the seagate st3320613as this drive has had a few bad reviews about reliablity but mine has been fine for the past month, a massive upgrade over my old 4 year old IDE drive

According to the benchies on toms 3.5 HDD chart,

It seems to be very fast indeed....

Its the F1's that have had some bad reviews. Not seen any on the Seagates myself.

Wouldn't go by reviews from that site.

Going to get a 640 F1 Samsung when they come back into stock with Scan

    Re: High density platters! Yarrr!

Called Ebuyer today, and the guy claimed that the version they are selling is single platter (took him a while to find out as he had to go into the WD spec).

I hope this is of use...

    Re: High density platters! Yarrr!

They should be by now. The single platter ones are all they make now and have done so for 3 or 4 months i think. The 00B3A ones should be what you are getting.

Mine is doing avg transfer at 92MB/sec and burst at 146MB/sec. Access times are a bit slow on them at around 15ms.

Mind you, I don't have AHCI enabled - would this make much difference?
