    Tagan TG530-U22 530W PSU & 280GTX?

Hi guys, I currently run my rig with my trusty old Tagan TG530-U22 530watt PSU amd need to upgrade my graphics card as ive just got a Dell 2408WFP. I tend to buy the best graphics card i can at the time and make it last, hence my X1900XTX which has powered my computer for years now.

Problem is, according to nVidia you need a 550w PSU with at least 40Amps on the 12v rails, now my PSU is 530w and has 36Amps on the 12v rails, am i gonna run into serious problems? Has anyone else got a GTX280 on a small PSU...

If its not gonna do, im gonna buy a decent PSU that will last a while, so at them moment im looking at the Corsair HX1000, anyone else have this?

    Cheers guys!

nVidia ramp up the PSU wattage recommendation to cover their asses in case someone plugs a cheap-ass 500W-that-only-really-outputs-200W PSU to the GPU. A high quality PSU like Tagans will easily handle it at just about any rating.

I reckon it will just about cope. My 480W Xclio is fine for a 9800gtx and a 100+W CPU at the same time...

Should be fine with that PSU. The nvidia specs are way over rated, that Tagan is still a good PSU.

BTW, that HX1000 you are thinking of getting is far too much. The HX620 would be a better choice if you feel compelled to buy a replacement.

    Re: Tagan TG530-U22 530W PSU & 280GTX?

Okay thanks for the imput guys, ive decided to upgrade to the TX750 to add a little redundency to the system, my tagan will be quitely retired to my other machine.

Im thinking of picking one up from scan tomorrow for £76.36, unless anyone can suggest any better PSUs for around the same cash... or point me to any negative reviews/experiances with the PSU.

The TX650W is only £60 on ebuyer and will have plenty of "redunduncy" too... You only need the 750W if you plan to sli gtx280's then you should really be buying the 1000W anyway...

Good lord, people are still talking about 1kW PSUs. Obviously, I didn't make myself clear enough.

YOU DON'T *NEED* ANYTHING OVER 600W, EVER.

Not unless you have a fusion generator as the energy source for your fuse/breaker box, and a rediculously overspeced PC wasting energy.

Your current PSU will be fine, if you really wanted to upgrade I'd recommend getting a modular PSU for convenience. A 650W PSU will eat up anything you're likely to throw at it for a long while: Corsair HX620W, 650W Dark Power, 625W Enermax Modu to name a few.

Steady on... I value your input but when i bought my Tagan people were saying the same thing and look if trends carry on they way they do whats wrong with building in redundency!

    Re: Tagan TG530-U22 530W PSU & 280GTX?

    Hey guys, just an update...

I managed to sell my Tagan 530w for a pretty reasonable price and splashed on the Corsair TX750...

My reasons, that fact the sale of my tagan discounted the price quite nicely. I also decided that the TX750 would do me for at least the 5 year warrenty period as im unlikey to run any dual card setups and I tend to run single high spec cards for long periods of time. Have to say its a really nice PSU and am really happy so far... We shall see how it copes with my Leaktek GTX 280 which is arriving tommorrow.
