I`d get the WD640AAKS for £51.86 @ Scan. It`s a very good drive, as fast/faster than the 1TB F1 in most scenarios, fairly cool and quiet. Partition it, with the first partition at 20%. It still leaves you with approx 500GB for extra storage.

But that would give it a performace hit surely?

I mean do you think 7 months is enough time for the older 2-platter drives to filter through and be effectively gone?

Does it mean anything after January will be the new model? Previous drives i have brought have always been only 1-2 months before the month i brought it so not that old.

It might be worth the risk as you can tell just by the model no/date to know if it is the new revised version.

Wow, hold up guys. The 1Tb Samsung uses 340Gb platters as well so its performance is the same as the 640Gb drives. Best thing to do according to Zak's "wierd" partition theory is:

Partition first 120Gb (more or less depending on what you need) for OS, apps/games; that leaves you 880Gb for media and other files.

The first parition would be running at the max speed of the drive all the time, so there is no need for a 640Gb drive. If you need more space just buy a new drive in future. The 1Tb Samsung is best for speed, storage and Gb/£.

    Hmm according to that theory;

I'm getting that Western Digital 640GB HDD, I was thinking to make a first partition of 100GB for my OS and other random programs (like MS Word etc.)
Make a second Partition of like 300 GB for files and the last partition of like 240GB for games...

According to that theory my games would run the slowest ;o?

    yes... lol

edit: your games would be crawling because all the data is stored at the centre of the drive

So what would be the smartest thing to do? (this theory even true =p? Or anyone ever noticed this ;o?)

Get 100GB for the OS and other programs, make the second partition the game partition and the third the files partition?
Or put games and OS on the same partition? (would mean I gotta make the first partition over 200 GB o.O)

Re: What Hard Drive is better, WD 640GB AAKS or Samsung F1 640GB?

Zak backed up his theory with some concrete numbers, maybe they were coincidence but it seems to make logical sense. We'll take it as true lol.

I would personally stick my OS with my apps and my games because accessing files from different partitions slows it right down. It doesn't matter if the partition is 200Gb, it is still on the outside so it will always perform at above average speeds. I stick my media and files on the second parition because they are quite independent files, and I have a last partition to make sure my media doesn't get stored in the centre of the drive.

Re: What Hard Drive is better, WD 640GB AAKS or Samsung F1 640GB?

I am wondering myself what the best partition size is for OS storage on a larger drive 300gb+, I have often formatted and partitioned drives of this size and found (most likely through laziness!) that I get that used to utilising applications default install folder as "C:\program files\" that I find I fill up the partition fast! Anyone have any tips on partitioning.

For example how much should I partition for say Windows Vista and then thinking about any plugins on top, then should I create a seperate partition for program files, and then a seperate partition for downloads/games.

Problem I always find with partitioning is that you restrict yourself to what can be stored where, then you see available space on a partition as a drive starts to fill up and before you know it your drive "organisation" all goes pete tong.

What would you use the last partition for though? xD

PS: Where can I see his topic ;o?
