Point taken.
Point taken.
...almost a week late so far, still no laptop.
It's complete and scheduled for delivery for tomorrow (4th sept) BUT...how did the order end up without the company's name on the delivery address??! Just tried calling up, bounced around a bunch of people and when I did get through to the right department I get told it'll take 7-10 days to correct a minor delivery address discrepancy??!
That is very poor from Dell and even more so for being so late (originally scheduled for delivery for 29th Aug).
The way things are going, my first and last dealing with Dell as a home consumer.
If it's scheduled for delivery tomorrow it may be that they've already despatched it to the courier so can't change the address? I agree Dell are rather inflexible about changing things once you've made your order though.
Company name...I presume you're getting it delivered to work and there are a lot of companies in the building? Or have I completely missed the point? Is there no way you can get a receptionist to take it for you?
There is a US army site next door (stuff has been attempted to be delivered there by mistake) and on site there are 2 sister companies. Oh and depending on which sat nav or online map, the post code points to somewhere random.
I only asked for delivery tomorrow because of the automated Dell telephone system, "press 1 for blah, press 2 for blah blah" and got to the delivery bit and it was either confirm delivery or not at all so I opted for tomorrow in case if I waited it went through to some person...but sadly no.
Oh and yes, am getting it delivered to where I work, I can't really afford to take time off to collect it at home.
Oh and Dell wouldn't forward my mobile number to the courier, they would only take it down for reference.
Really tempted to tell them to shove it, take the laptop back, gimme my money back and I'll go buy a cheap Acer lappy.
EDIT:
I also tried calling the courier to update the address and give them my number but they flatly refused as their customer is Dell and any changes has to go through Dell (which is understandable).

I got my laptop. Delivered by a white van no markings and didn't even deliver to me (addressed to me) but to our receptionist.
Anyhow, fired her up and all seems good It's 32bit vista so I've only got 3.5 ish GB ram to play with (which is more than my main rig).
I scored 4.0 on the windows Vista experience thing. I have NO idea how good or bad that is.
Also it came with 30 day trial of McAffee already installed. I want to get rid of that and put on KIS; is it safe to do so?
I'm gonna need help with Vista...it's so alien to me after being on XP for so long...lol.
For now, hook up to the internet and let it patch itself up
Yeah just uninstall mcafee and get KIS on
Hurray.....it's already screwed itself up.
All i have done so far...
1. Connect AC power
2. Turn it on.
3. Go through all the first time start up stuff.
4. Hook up to network and update vista.
5. Restart per update recommendation.
6. Laptop failed to restart and i get a nice message telling me I need to repair windows.
What a fantastic start.
Just used the first system restore point to see if that worked.
EDIT:
OK, using system restore worked and it restored it to the point WITH the updates on already? Bizarre.

Glad it got delivered OK.
Personally I reinstalled the OS on arrival anyway to get rid of the Dell crap, and only reinstalled the drivers etc that were necessary. Just makes me feel better knowing exactly what's on there. You don't even lose any data you have put on as it gives you a folder on the C drive called Windows.old with your entire old installation in.
Vista shouldn't be too hard to get used to, as far as I cared when I made the jump the annoying User Account Control had to be turned off and pressing Winkey + Tab did something new.
Ignore the Vista Experience score, the best thing that can be said about it is that it appears to be consistent (I got 4 too).
