    nah its not pointless, 486's have some excellent uses. I have my old 486 lappy in use atm, heres what ive done with it

    either

    Run Smoothwall on it..but its slow slow slow and kinda only barely works

    run linux on it. This is my primary use, i have slackware 3.7 on it (just command line, no Xwindows) and do most of my C programming on it =) Vi is much better than visual studio imho

    stick on dos and use it for old games..Commander keen, doom, monkey island..they all run fine on it =)

    stick windows on it, get a large HDisk and use it as a download rig thats left on 24/7, a half decent psu can make a 486 PC almost silent

    there ya go, some uses for the old faithful =) i cant find much use for my dodgy old 80386 tho =)

    I currently use my 486 as a workbench for soldering, hehe.

    When it's not doing that, it's got Linux on it.
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    Well I havent got a 486 but my brother is using a P100 for browsing, word processing and a certain amount of light CAD and tbh it works fine once you get used to it taking ages to open programs. Recently did a clean install of Win 98 on it and it runs quite nice. When my bro gets a better PC next year i'll use at as a Smoothwall box I think.

    You guys seem to forget that anly a few years ago these were fast computers. So as long as you dont want to play Farcry on them they still work perfectly well.

    yeah i would suggest a 486 is pretty much only good as a firewall. I found one in a skip about 2 years ago coming back from the pub. I took it home, stripped the cpu and the screws out, and dumped it back lol.

    Also good to practice modding on for sure. Also you could strip it for metal bits as well to make something for ur main rig.

    erm

    lol?

    I say ditch it... You can play with it for fun, but a 486 won't do much good for you today... You can try and learn something out of it, but the result won't do anything for you. It might have been good many years ago, but not today.

    If you actually plan to use the computer for anything at all, you can get much better stuff for barely nothing.

    Yeah, when you think of a machine gun when you hear that you've really gone too far

    I could recommend you a really good shrink? (j/k)

    yeh its running fine. put another hd in there lol only a 650mb but thats just for the os...the other 2gb will be for storage. i aint decided what os im gonna run yet. maybe damn small linux, or slackware, or maybe 98se (but doubt it). damn small linux maybe be better setup on hd rather than the live style. i will try both. it is currently running: 200mmx pentium 1,32mb dimms,can't remember mobo name, 650mb hd + 2gb hd, 36x lg cd rom,8x4x32 lg cdrw. more info soon.

    Let's play nice - Kez
