    does this combo work?

    hey,

    well my stupid pc still aint working....

    and i RMA'd my psu, and apparently it isn't faulty =S not sure bout that......but hmm ;s so now i gotta pay like 38 quid to get it back. sigh.

    can i put psu with just mobo to see if i get power? or does the proccy/hs have to be in to be able to test? cos then i guess i could tell for sure what's wrong, if indeed this psu isn't faulty. there isn't a chance scan didn't check it properly, or something, is there? (<-- not trying to be rude there hehe, just a general question :] )

    Thanks

    Re: does this combo work?

    Your motherboard will not power without a CPU installed, and you dont power a cpu without its heatsink on!

    As to Scan I would be very very surprised if they didn't test it.

    What circumstances made you decide the PSU was faulty? We will be needing as much information as you can give us to get to they bottom of your mystery, if the PSU truly is not faulty (which seems to be the case).

    Re: does this combo work?

    yeah, knew you didn't do cpu without a hs, but didnt know if you could combine just mobo + power.

    uhm, regards to the psu;

    first tried on my new pc, and it just wouldn't power......well, power for 1 second, then off for 3, in a continuous loop

    so tried on my bro's.....lots of wierd sounds, like them warning ones came, so we shut it off since my bro didn't want anything going wrong.

    so tried in my mums.......fine, for 30 seconds...then power went completely, it shut down and then just wouldn't boot or turn on at all.

    grounds to rma it, surely :?

    also, why is there such a big price for returning..i mean, £38 to get it back? not fair.....

    last thing;

    im using my 22" monitor with bro's pc......that's fine, isn't it? to play games....i mean, his gfx is pretty good, as everything else.......but just wanted your opinion ^_-

    Re: does this combo work?

    Hmm that does indeed sound like a faulty PSU, I assume in all test scenarios that all power leads were plugged in 24pin motherboard, 4pin ATX, any required PCIe power and hard drives (although it would post without a hard drive powered).

    As to why it costs so much I would imagine you are being charged a testing fee as well as the delivery to get it back to you.

    Personally I would contact Scan explain what you did and what happened and see if you can find out how they tested the PSU if it was connected to a test bed with processor etc then its a very strange situation if it was hooked up to a fan or hdd or even potentially a PSU tester it may have appeared to work fine but if the load wasn't there then it is hardly testing the PSU for its intended purposeis it. Equally if it was a modular unit perhaps the was a fault with one of the cables you were using (PCIe power perhaps) and scan used an alternative?

    Anyway get in contact with Scan either directly via phone or email/online query or post in the Scan care forum here on Hexus and hopefully somebody can help you get it sorted, their customer service is normally brilliant.

    Oh and since you didn't mentioned it what PSU was it make and model, perhaps armed with that other people may have had similar experiences we can draw on to sort this.

    Re: does this combo work?

    Certainly worth making contact with Scan to let them know that you had tested it on a number of systems all of which failed to work correctly but that it did provide some level of power hence beeping on your brothers machine. Maybe they will retest, as I do not know how Scan test RMAed PSUs it is hard to suggest reasons as to why you found it faulty and they are saying it is fine. Other than they test for an out put on all rails rather than actually connecting to a motherboard etc in this case it is possible that under light loads it appears fine or one cable is faulty and that is not being tested, but again I don't know the testing procedures.

    Certainly post on the Scan.Care section of the forums here or ring/email them directly at least that way you can ask questions quickly and get an instant response.
