Question Xigmatek HDT-S1283 mounting and case

I'm building a new rig based on advice in this thread.

However I'm having some problems with the Xigmatek heat sink. It doesn't fit my case (its too tall) and i'm worry about the weight of it on the motherboard.

Can anyone advise a good case thats about £40 that it'll fit in? Also am I safe to go without a screw through kit (use the included plastic pins) and if not should I wait for the official kit or a thermalright equivelent. This other forum post seems to indicate the thermalright is ok however i'm just really confused as I haven't fitted a heat sink since my last Athlon 1500!

Please help I'm desperate to use my new rig.

    Thanks!

Re: Xigmatek HDT-S1283 mounting and case

It should fit in any case which has a 120mm fan on the back for ~£40 I would suggest the Antec 300 http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=811571
    good quality case bargain price

As for the mounting brackets if you use the Thermalright one you will need to remove the plastic push pins from the current bracket and use then reuse the bracket with the screws instead. Or just wait for the official one to come into stock your call.

Oh and don't forget to get some decent thermal paste, arctic silver 5 and arctic cooling MX2 are the ones most people around here use.

Re: Xigmatek HDT-S1283 mounting and case

the xigmatek s1283 is 159mm tall so any case 190mm wide or more should fit it. (any case with a 120mm fan at the back will be a minimum of 205mm wide)

To give you some quick comparisons (all numbers with fan)
Stock intel Core 2 Duo Heatsink = 380g (note this is the hollow core version the older solid core is 460g)
    Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro = 520g
    Scythe Mine = 560g
    Xigmatek s1283 = 600g
    thermaltake big typhoon = 813g
    Scythe Ninja 2 = 820g

While it is far heavier than the stock cooler, but lighter that the heavy weights and all of these coolers attach with standard pushpins.

I would seriously consider the xigmatek bolt through kit, I personally prefur bolt through to the push pins.

Re: Xigmatek HDT-S1283 mounting and case

The Antec 300 was the one I was looking at but I read on the novatech sales forum for the case he struggled to fit a 17mm smaller Zalman cooler in the case ('Plenty of space for long graphics cards but it is only just wide enough for my zalman CNPS9700.' - here). Can anyone confirm for certain that this will all fit as I'm at the very bottom of my budget and can't afford to make a mistake here.

Re: Xigmatek HDT-S1283 mounting and case

Well this reviewer shows how close it comes to the edge of that particular case
    http://modders-inc.com/modules.php?n...tory4&reid=164
The case he is using is 190mm (7.5") wide the Antec 300 is 205mm wide that gives you an extra 15mm to play with, I can not see the being a compatibility issue here.

And the number of people who we have recommended the combination to in the past if it didn't fit I think one of them would have said something!

Re: Xigmatek HDT-S1283 mounting and case

It has a couple of centimeters of space free, I'm currenly running it inside my 300. Excellent case!

Only trouble is installing the fan after the HSF is secured in the case as the PSU is bottom mounted, tbh, it would be ALOT easier to install it so the fan blows upwards rather than toward the back like I did. *There are extration fans in the top and back anyway*. If you haven't already, pick up a crossbow mounting kit too!
