how to shut up an antec truepower 430?

    hi

i've really gone on a pc silencing craze recently, removing ALL chasis fans, my cooldrive 3 isn't plugged in. in fact the only fans left are:

60mm fan on the radeon 9700pro
    80mm fan on the cpu
2 * fans in the truepower (which are dominating)

question is, whats the best way of silencing them? does anyone have specs on the fans - airflow / noise? difficult to mod them to replace the fans?

    cheers

You could try replacing the fans in the PSU with something like the Vantec Stealths or Pabst low noise 80mm. But only if you know what you're doing. Of course, there's always the risk if you do that the PSU will overheat, but I've replaced PSU fans for quieter fans before and all was good.

there is also the chance that you'll give yourself a nasty shock!!! Get a GlobalWin super silent, very nice psu

    Steve

ps is it really a good idea removing all your chasis fans? Hope you don't have any high RPM disk drives in your case

It should be ok changing the fans if you get ones that are about the same rated CFM. maybe you could mod it and put a 12mm which would be much quieter and huge CFM...

Why not get a heat pipe for the r9700 as that would be silent, and smaller fans tend to give out a higher pitch of noise

i considered this but they retail at around £30 which is on the expensive side for a card that will be replaced next year...

oh and i'm considering a fan change - i was just wondering if there was an easy way of decreasing the speed of the existing fans whilst idling.

you can pick the zalmans up for around £15 inc on forums i have one on my 9800 pro
you will need case fans if your gonna be using a zalman as it heats your case up and no fans blowing cool air in or sucking the hot air out is a bad idea
as for decreasing your fan speed try a nexus vantec fan controller heres a review

You can decrease the speed of the fans by fitting an in line resistor on the 12V rail to each fan. Not sure what value offhand, but quarter watt rating will do. Again, only if you know what you're doing, and that maxim also applies to the risk of getting a shock. If you leave the PSU shut down for 24 hours, all internal capacitors should be discharged, but not always, so be careful what you touch.
