i7 Intel Nehalem Chipset

Before i take the plunge and buy a new system i have one last question...

With the release of the Intel Nehalem chips on the horizon will we see a dramatic drop in the prices of the currently existing chip sets or will they hold there price for the first year or so while the Intel Nehalem chips are still "overpriced"??

I know no one can give an exact answer as we don't how things will turn out but if you able to base it on how things have worked in the past it would be much appreciated

You're likely to see a some price drops, especially on the very expensive chips. The Q6600 is likely to go back down to £105/£110 as it has been at times.

Others may end up going EOL, it's hard to tell really. Don't expect massive savings on midrange chips though, I can't remember what you are aiming at getting.

I would say within the first few months of the i7 being released, c2d's will drop a fair amound. Not instantly, but noticable. Will take a few months as i say.

I'm looking at an E8400 chip, so about midrange im guessing?

As with everything, when a new tech is introduced the techs below will see some discounts. But as others have said, this should (not always the case) only make large savings in the higher end market rather than the mid market.

So i should be safe speccing this:

Intel C2D E8400 CPU
BFG GTX 260 GPU
4GB Corsair DDR2 800MHz C5 Twin2X RAM

I doubt you would lose much. I probably said it before though, if you are willing to overclock (or even if you're not really) just get an E5200. It will easily get to 3.5GHz (without overclocking the RAM) and the performance difference when paired to that GTX260 is going to be next to nothing. £55 and peace of mind
