Re: My friend just spent sooo much on a PC

    It's a right cock up...

I doubt a 800W PSU can power all of that.

    and

Why the two X2s? Two are useless for gaming, check the reviews and even useless-er for number crunching. I'd understand if nvidia cards were used, they rock at number crunching.

    Summary:

    - Incompatible CPUs
    - Incompatible RAM
    - Soon to be obsolete
    - Inadequate PSU
    - Waste of GPUs

    All yours for £4300!

Slight derailing here, but how do you guys think the release of the new i7 stuff is going to effect the price of the core 2 duo stuff? Obviously it will drop, but how long does it usually take to filter down?

For that kind of money, he can buy a real supercomputer, or even a small cluster.

Your friend has more money than sense.

starting prices for anything you'd call a "supercomputer" are rather higher than £5k

That money could buy one (or even two) of these.

cray's toy windows deskside cluster, the CX1, has a starting price of £5200 plus VAT- with no compute nodes. nodes start at £2600

a "proper" cray such as an xt5 or xmt would be well into 6 figures for a starter package

That doesn't surprise me. I looked at the XMT on their website, and when the only 2 industry solutions are Government and Defence, and Higher Education, you know they are gonna be serious!

Here's your supercomputer*, prices starting at under £4k inc. VAT:
    http://www.google.co.uk/products?hl=...0supercomputer

    Here's your cluster - approximate cost = 8 x £300 + some effort...

*nVidia called it a supercomputer, not me...
