Help! Bent 775 CPU socket lid?

    hello,

I received a motherboard today for my new system. This is my first ever build using a 775 mechanism.

When I came to install the CPU, I did everything it said in the instruction booklet. I opened the lever, took off the black cover, inserted the CPU. However, when I came to return the metal cover thing, I noticed something wrong, I needed to exert a lot of force in order to place the lever back into it's position. I didn't want to cause any damage, so I stopped and opened the cover again. Looking along the side, I noticed it was slightly bent in the middle. Is this normal? It was the almost the same along the other side, just a little more bent.

Re: Help! Bent 775 CPU socket lid?

Yep, it's supposed to be bent in the middle, it holds the CPU down like a spring. You'll encounter a bit of resistance as you push the lever back down into locking position due to this.

    pics please

I'll be honest, I've fitted LGA775 cpus many times, but I can't remember how stiff it was to clamp. I'm certain it was very minor force and nothing should significantly bend at all, just enough to hold it.

Re: Help! Bent 775 CPU socket lid?

They normally take a fair bit of effort to get down tbh. Make sure the cpu is in correctly (no wiggle room) and then do what it it takes unless it really won't go with a lot of force.

If it breaks.. send it back and say it came that way

Re: Help! Bent 775 CPU socket lid?

Takes quite a bit of force to push it down. Just a worried first time user most likely I doubt it's damaged. I remember trying to install my AMD Athlon XP heatsink with my hands thinking why the hell is the opposite tab so teeny I can't get any grip!

    Yeah silly me..

    hello,

    Thanks for the (fast!) replies!

Here are some pictures of what it looks like:

By the way, about the seating of the CPU. When it's inserted, I find it can move about 1mm either way. Is this ok/?

Re: Help! Bent 775 CPU socket lid?

Looks normal to me, make sure it slots in with the notches on either side, then push that lever. The notches are those two little U shapes cut into the cpu side parrallel to each other.

It is in the right position, I can see the writing going in the right direction (right angle to lever) like in this pic

Re: Help! Bent 775 CPU socket lid?

Lift the lid off the cpu and take one, then we can 100% sure tell you to clamp it down. Although I'm 99.9999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999 999% sure it's correctly orientated already.

Re: Help! Bent 775 CPU socket lid?

    hello,

Thanks for all your advice guys.

I managed to fit everything together without any problems, except for the motherboard I bough (the gigabyte EP31 DS3L) having some pretty horrendous clearance issues. Any card installed in the bottom PCI slow will block access to the FDD and case connectors. Install the card in the slot above and you block 2 of the sata ports. Ah well, I'm only using 2 drives anyway.

Good one, pity about the design issues on that board. You should always check before hand to make sure the layout is well positioned for what you're going to use.
