Don't get me wrong im sure there are people with maxtor drives that work fine, but from my personally experience I've heard / seen sooo many fail. I guess it just depends how much you value your data. I'd rather buy another hdd which will perform the same for the same amount of money, that is well known for being stupidly reliable. Can't see why people would go with maxtor, oh and ata133 is just a gimmik!

Seagate coming in a very close second - i only put the maxtor first due to its speed.
How many brands have you used though?

Maxtors arent particually fast either tbh....

most brands, i do after all build systems

Ive found them to be faster than most other drives. They have a huge raw read and write speed, which is very noticable when dealing with big files (eg. video encoding, large scale rendering, cross platform backup). Although the seek times are not the fastest, they are just average. Also not the quietest drives, i wouldnt use one in my server because of the loud read / write heads, although these can be altered at the cost of performace via AMSET.EXE from the maxtor site, its still louder than say, a seagate.

I had a couple of cheapo hard drives, which failed after about six months/a year each. Got a Seagate afterwards, and has lasted me for ages now. Not much experience with any other brands though.

avoid excelstor. seen a lot of dead excelstor's - in fact nearly all excelstor's i've seen were because they were dead - or replacements that died within weeks of us getting them in.

maxtor, seagate, western digital all good in my opinion, but I personally think it's best to go with Samsung because you get a 3 year warranty - and they are virtually silent, and very very fast!
