Re: So.... who can remember all the systems they built for themselves?

I can't remember the specifics of the builds, but here's basically what I've built in the past for myself. I've had a look at my order history at ebuyer for some reminders.

1st build was in 2003. It was an Athlon XP 1700+ overclocked to 3200+ speeds. Originally had an Asus A7N266-VM-L motherboard then got an A7N8X Deluxe. I used several graphics cards with this mb and later upgraded to an Athlon XP 2500+ that was rubbish at overclocking.

2nd build was a Sempron 2800+ on some MSI nforce 3 motherboard overclocked to some amount that I can't remember. That motherboard started playing up so I replaced it with a DFI lanparty nforce 3 mb and I couldn't overclock the cpu even a little bit, despite being apparently one of the best overclocking boards at the time. It was unstable at everything except stock so that's where it stayed.

3rd build was a Pentium D 805, initially overclocked (again can't remember how much), but then taken back down to stock. I think it was because of the massive amounts of heat it chucked out. That was on an ASUS P5LD2 Deluxe mb with 2gb ram and a Geforce 7600GT gfx card. I've still got that one within the family.

4th build was a Core2Quad Q6600 on an ASUS P5K mb, which was later changed to a P5K-E wifi. It had 4gb ram, 640gb (total) hdd, Geforce 8800 GTS 320mb gfx card, tv tuner card, OCZ 600W stealthxstream PSU, and some big Scythe heatsink. This was the most that I've ever spend on a build and for the time was top notch. This one is also still in use within the family.

Now I'm just using a desktop replacement laptop. No more hassle and no more temptation to spend money on computer parts.

Re: So.... who can remember all the systems they built for themselves?

    1995: Pentium 90Mhz, 16MB Ram, 230MB + 320MB HDD (I was 9 when I built it)
    1998: Pentium /w MMX 166Mhz (overclocked to 225Mhz), 32MB Ram, 2GB HDD
    1999: Pentium II 300Mhz (overclocked to 450Mhz), 128MB Ram, 2GB HDD
2001: Pentium III 800Mhz (overclocked to 920Mhz), 256MB Ram, 20GB IBM Deathstar (It failed 3 times in 4 months, ended up "upgrading" to 40GB 5400RPM IBM which lasted for years)
    2002: Upgraded to 80GB HDD
    2003: Upgraded to 80+60GB HDD
    2004: Athlon XP 2500+, 1GB Memory, 200+200+160+160+80+60GB HDD
    2005: Athlon 64 3000+ @ 2.7Ghz, 1GB Memory, Tons of 300G HDDs + god knows how many
    2006: Another Athlon 64 3000+ @ 2.7Ghz, Also a Pentium D 2.8Ghz @ 4Ghz
    2007: Core2Duo T7200 laptop
    2008: Xeon X3350/Q9450, DELL T8400 laptop
    2009: Nothing yet.

I still remember the motherboard brand and chipset for the motherboard but I won't remember the model name. Could probably look it up though.

Between 2005-2007 I literally install one new HDD every 45 days (while selling the smallest drives). The uptrend halted since 2008 and my storage steady at just over 9TB. Planning to get 8x1.5TB RAID6 upgrade and sell all my non-TB drives.

I threw so much money into all this stuff that would eventually become junk :S

Re: So.... who can remember all the systems they built for themselves?

I have only just started building since I was 17, so last year.

    2008:
    Q9450 2.66Ghz overclocked to 3.7Ghz (water cooled)
    Asus 680i -> EVGA 780i a month later (680i didn't support Q9450, would work but no oc)
    8Gb G.Skill 1066Mhz DDR2
    Dual EVGA 8800gts 512mb SSC
    150Gb Raptor
    500Gb backup
    Antec 900

    Late 2008/2009 (Current build):
    Core i7 965 3.2Ghz overclocked to 4.35Ghz (water cooled)
    Gigabyte Extreme X58 (water cooled)
    6Gb G.Skill 1600Mhz DDR3 overclocked to 1740Mhz
    BFG GTX295
2 x 150Gb Raptors Raid 0 (Maybe SSD's this year if cheap enough, got uni to worry about though)
    500Gb backup
    1.5Tb Server

The old pc is now my dad's, which he got for real cheap Funny how he used to give me his old hardware.

Re: So.... who can remember all the systems they built for themselves?

I started with (I think) a PII-300 back in '97-ish which was my first full build. Though not my first PC which was a 386DX back in ye olde days.

I honestly can't remember the details of all the itterations and revisions on my PCs since. I don't think I've been through a single rebuild without using a significant number of components from the previous build.

i dont see the point in keeping the old system alive, i take as much as i can out the old system and either keep the rest or sell it
