Need a new power supply, £50 what does that get me ?

Just taken the lid off my PC as I wanted to change some hard drives round, when I looked at the back of my current power supply (Xilence 480 watt) that I've been using for the last 3 years has started to fall apart on me !!

The socket where the power lead connects is pretty much hanging out and the power supply casing is literally caving in, yet it still works.

I was hoping to get the same unit again, but where I got this one from don't sell them anymore

Not paying Corsair money, hoping to spend about £50 all in.

I wasn't expecting a reply that quickly, thanks

Have just found a spare PSU here that I can use temporarily untill a new one arrives. Think I shall be ordering the Silverstone

Re: Need a new power supply, £50 what does that get me ?

The corsair is a great PSU and always best bought from scan due to the warranty deal they have

If you wanted modular though I'd go for a 400 - 500W OCZ modxstream, very good PSU's

I was looking at those, but I may have to stretch over my £50.

What about the Corsair 400w CX series? Available for about £40:

Can't find any reviews of it though, as was also considering it for myself.......

What about the PowerCool PSU's? Are they any good or do they just totally suck, as they are pretty cheap...

Looks like they are for OEM market, not really for Retail. It also a 120mm fan, it is gonna be loud-ish.

They're aren't for OEM any more so than other corsair products afaik. It's corsairs budget range essentially but it won't be loud it will very quiet much like all their products and will almost certainly be reliable. Personally having a VX though I'd be more comfortable recommending that.

Re: Need a new power supply, £50 what does that get me ?

I went round to a mates this evening and he had a brand new in the box OCZ Stealth Stream 500 watt he didn't need. He bought it for a build for someone who then changed their mind last week, he was going to send it back and get a refund but I bought it off him.

Haven't fitted it yet, but will do so on Tuesday when I've got 5 minutes to spare.

The OCZ StealthXStream units are relatively good, there are better units out there, but since your system doesn't really use much over 200W, a 500W one will be ample.

Seems to have been noise issues with those over the years, should be fine but might not be..

I've got the 600watt version. Good solid psu's, reasonably quiet and if you check the reviews for them they are very good. Plus I got mine for £30 inc (second hand, but only 2 months old with a receipt)
