Re: Lower end Core i7 processors to get the chop!

Thought i5 performance would probably be similar to i7 as the only major differences are HT and triple-channel from what I can tell, and triple-channel seems wholly unnecessary, what could use all that bandwidth?

Still, as others have said, it's a shame i5 will probably be more expensive than everyone was hoping, and also that the 8-core i7s will probably now be £450+.

Not really. I have had untold amount of grief in the last 6 months with terrible quality INTEL motherboards failing regularly. At work ! Systems that are about 1 year old - totally dead - motherboards swapped out when they can source them and replace them.

So my gripe is not purely personal, as you may have wrongly guessed. At the end of the day, I have the support and understanding (rightly so) of my management, as it is me in the firing line when system break down and I have to pacify users, not the management.

And this strange direction of thinking from Intel is certainly not going to earn them many fans. At the end of the day, it is our hard earned money, which it seems Intel is quite happy to fill their coffers with.

I have always been an Intel person (although my current system is AMD based), but I was quite keen to get back to Intel's platform.

However, this i7-i5 scenario is making me wonder.

I am in a position where I am responsible not only for purchases, but also providing advice to various people from management to laymen about IT purchases. I certainly will not want to have it on my concious that I suggested they bought something that will suddenly become zero-value in a matter of time.

It's about getting the best value for our money now, sod loyalties.

Intel have really screwed up this time, hope more people in the industry show their annoyance by buying AMD based systems. I, for one, will be doing just that at work, and over the next 2 months, use our budget of £30k to buy AMD based PCs

That looks like backpdalling to me.
I also wonder who the manufacturer of those intel motherbaords is. Either you are self building PC's at work which is a complete wste of time, effort and money or you are blaming intel for someone elses ****up.
