Phase change memory promises ''instant on'' computers. Could that save the PC?

For those turned off by personal computers' lengthy boot times, phase change memory could be an instant turn on.

On Tuesday Numonyx announced a new engineering standard that will bring phase-change memory closer to a consumer reality. Dubbed "PCM" for short, phase change memory is a new way for storing and retrieving digital information. PCM technology promises computers that turn on instantly and pick up right where the user left off. Unlike Flash memory, whose popularity was sealed by the rising trend in smartphone devices, PCM will likely be picked up first by computer manufacturers.

Sounds like the Hibernate function, just more reliable?

I wasn't aware the PC needed saving. Now I know they're endangered I might take better care of mine.

So we're talking about something that could, in theory be used as a sort of high speed SSD which also bypasses the need for system memory? That sounds quite useful.

Well it's ultimately a matter of cost effectiveness. If they can prove the theory that they can produce it in quantity at a price that makes it viable, and there is a marketplace for it, then it might just happen.
