final checks before i start my first overclocking epic adventure

    hi guys

the final bits of my *new rig will b ariving in the next 2 or 3 days, id like to run a couple of things past you guys to make sure i dont blow anything up (i have a bit of a habbit of doing that...... )

    parts are......
    e6700
    Akasa Nero heatsink
    p5b deluxe
    ddr2 800 XMS2 crosshair Corsair 4GB (2 x 2Gb) ram (stock 1.8v 5-5-5-15)
ummm aint gunna bother clocking gfx

so my question to those in the no, is what sort of voltages/temps can i hit (resonably) safley, considering this pc stays on about 10h a day (95% idol). ill put a slow, quiet 92mm fan over the ram probs, nothing mayjor.

id like to think the air flow in my case is pritty good..... my £25 case used 2 be ****, but ive modifyed it (cut myself plenty in the proccess ) so now i got 2 80mm intake + 1 92mm intake, and a 120mm exaust + a really good psu that kicks out a fair amount of air. oh and my HD4870 is 1 of thoses 1s with the ****ty exaust blowers.... rather not have it but still lol.

so hit me with some number plz
    thanks

Your best bet is to go to Intel's website and find your CPU's specs, there you will find Intel's recommend max safe voltage and also a recommened tempurature to stay below.

Personaly i wouldn't let my CPU go past 65C under 100% load OR put more than 1.34V through it.

But check Intels site and then you can decide wheather or not to exceed their recommendations.

Also get some good thermal gease like artic silver 5. (will help to bring down temps)

    Good luck.

I'd aim for a 24/7 chip to run at one or both of these conditions:
    1. Intel max voltage + 3%
    2. Linpack load temp of 70c

I think your chip will hit the temperature wall at well below your maximum voltage with air cooling.

    thanks for the replys

now correct me if im wrong (quite likely) but surley for a comp that spends most of its time in a idol state / web browsing, the idol temps are going to be the ones that dictate the life expectancy of the cpu? although oviously i understand i need reasonable load temps for when it does get called into some action....

i was under the impression that 1.4v was very safe, while 1.5 is around as high as you can go with air? i think the next few days are going to be a steep learning curve

    EDIT

mayby 10h a day was an exaggeration.... id say more.... 5 or 6.

Re: final checks before i start my first overclocking epic adventure

My old e6600 when max overclocking I was able to hit 3.8, 3.9 Ghz @ 1.675v on a Zalman 9700

So trust me anything below 1.5v is fine, especially if your temps stay below 60c
