In COD4, hardly the most accurate performance test - also, as I said, some games it has almost no effect on, others (I would presume the ones that use the most video memory, such as GTA4) it will have a big effect.
Ftr, my PC with an E5200 and HD4830 uses less power than a PS3
From the results I've seen, the i7 idle results are far from exemplary.

I agree, the advantage of the i7 is lower clocks per calculation ratio because of more streamlined arch, and more threads. If you don't use many (or any) multi-threaded applications, then you're probably better of with an AMD, considering they are cheaper.

Or a Core 2. I still spec more 775 builds than i7s, but the i7s are slowly growing in popularity.

There was an article about it a while back, I think from anandtech (so pinch of salt as always) but it was pretty conclusive in certain games. As I say, I used half-bandwidth on my X2s and I didn't see a huge difference, but calculating it, it does seem like games used to run a bit slower.

I just looked through the articles from the last few years and couldn't find it. The only thing I could find was the Tomshardware one where they showed that going above 4x PCIe 1.0 didn't make much difference (at the time).
