Question AMD Phenom II X4 995 running slow. HELP!

    Afternoon all,

I need step by step instructions to help my sort out this problem I have.

I built myself a computer using and AMD Phenom II X4 955 processor. The other week I ran a CPU speed checker which told me that my computer was running at 800MHz. It then compared this to other results and told me that my speed was rubbish. This is supposed to be a really good processor!

I left a similar thread a while back but nobody could help - I really can't understand techy speak so I need clear, simple intructions on how to fix this problem.

    Thanks,

    $eamonk3y

Re: AMD Phenom II X4 995 running slow. HELP!

    install and run cpu-z

core speed (near the bottom left) is what you look at.

it should say 800 mhz, when the computer is idle - doing nothing.

if you then load up some programs - media player, internet, and so on - the core speed should then increase to the cpus maximum. 3200 mhz

what you may notice, is that the speed doesnt fully go up to 3200mhz, it may just do 1600, 2100, or 2800 mhz.

this is all down to the cool n' quiet option in the BIOS which reduces the speed and voltage of the chip to save energy, i.e. electricity bills.

its nothing to worry about and i would just ignore it.

sorry about not being clearer in the other thread.

I did what you said - at the moment I have:

    Windows Media Player
    Realplayer
    iTunes
    Internet
    Windows Update
    Steam

    all on and doing things

    And it still says 800MHz

    What's wrong!

Re: AMD Phenom II X4 995 running slow. HELP!

just checked on mine and it does go down again to 800mhz even if theres loads of things open, it also occasionally 'blips' to 1600mhz.

if you are wondering why i didn't say to run a game, its because not all games actually support alt-tabbing back to the desktop to allow checking CPU-Z, it was easier if you didnt come across this whilst checking if the frequency would budge. (plus i forgot about prime95)

so if you want, you can check the BIOS, press del or F1 on boot-up to get in, and have a look for the cool n' quiet option, then disable it, save and exit, run CPU-Z again, see what it says.

or do as the next couple of replies say.

Load up prime95 with CPU-Z open. This should budge it from 800Mhz.

As above anything slightly intensive should budge it, encode a video, play a game in a window, run intel burn test all should work.

Re: AMD Phenom II X4 995 running slow. HELP!

I am running Prime95 right now doing a stress test and it just won't budge above 800.1MHz!
Do you think my processor is broken? Or perhaps some of the bios settings?

Cool and quiet is off by the way

Re: AMD Phenom II X4 995 running slow. HELP!

I found something called Frequency Multiplier and it's set to 4x 800MHz

When I set it to Auto it made no difference - I also tried 5x - 900MHz but no change...

    right,
    that is odd.

one last thing to check then.

does your motherboard fully support your CPU. the BIOS might not have heard of your CPU, so its trying its best to run it and cant run it past 800mhz.

so, whats your motherboard? what BIOS revision/version has it got?

Shouldn't the multiplier be set to 16x - hence 3.2GHz???

Re: AMD Phenom II X4 995 running slow. HELP!

starting to look like the motherboard doesnt support the CPU fully. judging by all the To Be Filled By O.E.M. from your CPU-Z report. and also the CPU support list on the following link.

then, following the steps, select your motherboard from the list,

select your operating system, then click submit.

on the next page, scroll down to the BIOS section

download the Sep 4th 2009 file.

extract the downloaded zip file and read the included readme on how to install.

    ______
the earliest BIOS is march 18th, yours is dated 16th feb, so it looks like you only have a pre-release/beta BIOS installed.
the highest chip it supports is the PII X4 925

you can find the cpu support list underneath the Utility section on the downloads page.
    ______

    good luck.

  18. Received thanks from:
