why dont you just use 4 speed discs for the time being as they are so cheap! (i use pack of 25 Bulkpaq 4x = £9.80)
the NEC drive will burn any type/brand of dvd - just depends what you are playing the discs on.
If you really want 8x i think SVP had some in, they have every kind of disc anyway: http://www.blankdiscshop.co.uk/
Ive used loads all without any problem, also had some 4x disks that would write at 6x without a hitch.
