Creating a RAID array in addition to extra cost wasn't something i really had in mind. I'm thinking of maybe a couple of TB hard drives in a case to store the family media files mostly - input appreciated though ! How compatible is OpenSolaris with Windows ?

Well I am in the process of sorting out Amazon S3 based backups for important files, but I have a bunch of other stuff Microsoft Action Pack ISOs, music etc. which although I could recreate/redownload would be a PITA, and RAID gives me a 1st layer of protection.

You can use ZFS with just a single drive, you don't need to implement RAID.

If you want to share a ZFS filesystem (to windows), you just do:

zfs set sharesmb=on <pool>

You can do more with it, ie certain users only, certain client read only etc.

I'm probably going to do a write up of what I did when I get around to it.

1080p directly from a Blu-Ray disc, should be fine with GPU acceleration, anything else 1080p, big no-no. Personally don't see much point of NOT getting a dual core or triple core as the price difference is quite small. The power consumption will be quite a lot higher though.

Well i was aiming for lower power so thats why i was thinking of the Sempron, the Athlon X 2/3 efficient editions are just too dear for my budget.
