Whats the jig with the standard drive and the upgrade kit? I've been looking on CCL and I don't personally think the price is that bad: £80 for 40GB, £110 for 64GB - with free next day delivery. But the upgrade kit si cheaper than the standard kit for the 64GB variant - WTF.
Also, i know these are Intel's in disguise but do they support TRIM ? Can't seem to find any info on Kingstons website and theres no mention of the 40GB version on there website at all.

The 40GB ones have the intel controllers, the 64GB are old JMicron controllers and should be avoided
The 40GB Kingston branded ones are now discontinued, however intel have brought out an intel branded one with a slightly higher price tag (~£95).

Ahhhh sugar. Thought i was on to something good with them 64GB ones. I suppose 40GB for £80 isn't bad in a performance gain light but space left over could be a problem if im honest to myself

Also, the upgrade kit is just an "adapter" to seat the drive in a 3.5" bay for those without a 2.5" bay AFAIK.

Yup, plus you get a copy of acronis + a sata cable I think. With the laptop upgrade you get an external enclosure. The have quite low write speeds, so people have been buying two and raid0'ing them. Although, doing that and you are almost at the price of a 80GB Intel

I've read so much about SSD over the last few months I guess its all getting messy in there!
People who have been raiding them arent concerned about the lack of trim because trim isnt supported by any raid controllers currently, and if need be they can image the raid, break it, use the manual wiper utils then re-create and re-image (fun times).

I believe the 64GB version has a modified firmware that avoids the JMicron stutter problems, and while it's not quick by SSD standards, its random read performance is still better than a mechnical drive by some distance.
Ah, yes, here's the Hexus Review. As I remembered, decent read performance, but the cost of modifying the JMicron to remove the write stutter is below par write performance (worse than a mechnical drive, in fact). I believe for real world performance, though, random read speed is the most important factor? So it might be worth a pop anyway...
