Arrow Mysterious noise coming from computer

Hello there, just hoping some of you might have a clue what is going on with my computer at the moment. It's nothing really major, but it's irritating as hell.

Basically, there is suddenly a very high-pitched noise coming from inside the computer. This noise started the second I placed my new bluetooth adapter into the usb port on the back of the computer. When I unplug, or disable the bluetooth adapter, the noise stops, so it is definitely this which is causing it.

However, the noise doesn't appear to be coming from the bluetooth adapter, which is what I thought it was at first. It's coming from inside the case.

Could it be something to do with the PSU, and me having plugged in an extra device - not something specifically to do with the bluetooth adapter, just that it's using up a bit more power? Seems unlikely to me, especially since this noise now occurs when I am doing nothing on the computer, yet it never happened before whilst playing games etc, when the power usage would have been higher than it is at the moment.

Also, another strange thing is that the noise seems to stop for a split second in certain circumstances, such as when something is loading. i.e., if I click My Computer, in the split second during which the My Computer window loads up, the sound stops. Then it just begins again as normal.

And when I'm actually using bluetooth (because it's working fine, aside from this noise), the noise seems to flicker on and off, as if it it is off whenever data is being received or transmitted.

Well, I know I've not given much detail, and this could possibly be very difficult for you to point at the cause of the problem without more info, but if you need more details just tell me what you want to know. Hopefully somebody who's more experienced with these things will be able to help me.

    Thanks

have you tried the adapter in another pc? does it make the same noise then? how old is ur PSU? (they tend to provide less power with age, could it be on its way out?) have u actualy opened ur case and tried to locate the source of the sound?

Try looking in the GFX card direction - for some reason GFX cards start to make noise when they get older. Also, check your mic and line in on your soundcard control panel are muted as that can cause pickup from the Southbridge.

Try different USB ports, try a USB extension cable. See if that makes any difference, it might be loading that port, or interference that is the issue.

That the noise disappears, is probably because it is 'masked' by onset of another sound. (Science bit; Your auditory periphery triggers preferentially to broader band sound.)

Is your computer a laptop? Casual searching of google for "usb bluetooth causes high pitched" goives several discussions and fixes for that issue.

Re: Mysterious noise coming from computer

It could be a number of things and its impossible to tell exactly without hearing the noise. That said...look at these things:

1). Fan bearings going in a case for or CPU fan.
2). Can caps tend to 'whistle' before they pop. EIther the ones on the mobo or the ones in the PSU.
3). Dodgy fan in the PSU
    4). Dodgy GPU fan.

Out of the 4 points above, my money goes onto the Can Caps. This is very common. Take the side off the case and see if there is any leakage/corrosion on any of the mobo ones.

Re: Mysterious noise coming from computer

Might be worth unplugging your speakers or switching them off. If the noise still happens then you know for sure its not coming from those. That would be one thing off the list anyway.

Re: Mysterious noise coming from computer

Probably a vibrating power regulation coil somewhere on the PSU or motherboard.
