Is there a credible review of these capabilities? as I know both amd and nvidia cards can do GPU acceleration (PS CS4 and 5, video encoding and folding)

I wonder how do they compare.

I use the gpu only in adobe software atm (mainly in ps). but I wonder if i could make use of my aging 4850 in other areas

It's widely known that NVIDIA is better at folding and I can convert a video to my iTouch in about 5 minutes and the quality is still excellent..

I know that's not hard proof or anything but that's my usage of the card and it works well for what I want so I'm happy with it .

It also runs cool and quiet so... Win .

No mention of Fermi there, but the AMD 5870 leaves the GTX295 in the dust.

Re: The founder off AGEIA leaves nvidia and moved to ATI

well, I have tried the video encoding on my 4850...using the xcode thingy which is provided by amd, and it is pretty impressive.

I have encoded a vid in 13 seconds and the same encoding (to the same quality) took 60 seconds on my 3.4Ghz phenom 2 using all the 4 cores.... **** yeah!

thanks matty for bringing my attention to video encoding on GPUs!

lol, well under Linux I think you have a point.

I bought a 9500gt for my work Linux box with my own money because I was so fed up with the Intel integrated graphics drivers locking up the machine, and as a bonus I get dual head and can turn on all the eye candy effects in KDE

And before anyone says anything, yes a 9500 is a bit of an odd choice and a lower card would have done the trick, but the price was good and I like the really big fan on it.
