Well if it is not spinning then i'm afraid there is little hope for it. As far as i know the the motor control is seperate from the controller and this probably means the motor is dead and i don't think it is possible to change the motor on modern drives without wrecking it.

As has been said if BIOS doesnt recognise it then there is f**k all chnace of getting any OS to recognise it.

I feel sorry for you with all your stuff on it . I suddenly realised the importance of backing up of my college stuff when i had a near escape with a hard drive a few weeks ago.

You could try hotplugging it, that will get around the bios detection issue, not saying it will work, but when it is already b0rked i think it is worth a chance.

Yes, but the controller usually tells the motor to spin up.

Well thing is that this is the recommended method for getting xbox harddrives recognised when you wish to use them in a normal pc after removing them for a mod.
How can it blow badly on an atx board? I was of the impression ( totally not an overclocker so not 'into' voltages) that there is not a lot of power on this anyway and not a lot of damage could be done? If I'm wrong fair enough but aren't there caddies you can buy to make IDE hotpluggable that have no capacitors?

IDE wasn't designed to be hot pluggable. Though it is theoretically possible.

If your going to hotswap it, use a PATA->SATA converter.
    SATA is hot-swapable.

Okay, I shall try the hot swap.

My mum just took sympathy on me and shelled out for a 160GB spinpoint. Which was nice. And it has a 3 year warranty. I hope I got a good one!
She wouldn;t stretch to a couple of 74GB raptors though.... No RAID for me...

Nice, but for the sake of the spinpoint - don't install it until you've finished arsing about with the dud drive. It wouldn't be good to have two dead drives!
