That system looks like a pile of poo. The celerons run stupidly bad and that wouldn't run much no. There's no point in limiting yourself and being impatient and blowing your money on something you'll regret getting. Tell 'im to save up and get something decent.

I would think building him a pc wouldnt be on the cards really as if the kids parents arent computer literate a custom built pc would seem riskier to them than smoking at a petrol station

Also pete would then have all the hassle of fixing it when they inevitably screw it up at least if its from pcworld they can take it back and comlain...

Also didnt microsoft make office for mac, thought they did...

Theres no chance of that machine playing any recent game well. In this guys situation i would reccomend waiting for the games to be released on consoles- i know farcry at least is coming out.

Edit: you can of course buy excellent bre built pc's from certain companies mesh being one such vendor

    Yep they definitely do.

Wouldnt mind a mac powerbook G4. They have to be the best looking laptops out there at the moment. What would put me off would be buying software twice. How can anyone afford different copies of expensive programs likethe Adobe programs and other design and CAD programs?

If your friend realises the PC is crap, tell him to take it back while he still can.

I agree that a custom build is not really an option for you either.

Also, MESH and Evesham are not good at the bottom end of the spectrum. Forget Dell .

www.novatech.co.uk is the place for decent value PCs...they have proper support..

What about this one - above budget, but worth it...

Configure it with WinXP and a 17" CRT and it's about £550....

Buy a better PC with the extra 100. The main thing is to have an AGP port on it. If its cheap and has onboard graphics its still ok as long as you can upgrade to a videocard later (if it has an AGP slot)

And the difference between 4x and 8x AGP is still practically zero!! Even with cutting edge videocards benchmarked, there's virtually no difference between 4x and 8x.

Hmm... Must agree here dgr! While I'm no pro, I have enough knowledge to change a processor, ram, etc. Therefore a lot of my friends expect me to do the most menial jobs (could you come round and install msn messenger for me?!?), or that I know every bit of software intimately - as if I'm not tied up enough with mine. Go and read up/ask how like I do! I gladly help people who I can - just not lazy b'stards that cant read a help file.

As for PC World - Noooo! This crap (PB) I got here was from there about 5 years ago. Was basically mis-sold by a cretin with the tech knowledge of a peanut! "Is it upgradeable?" "Yes", "Does it have a proper fax/data/voice modem?" "Yes"... Wrong!

that last one from PC World isnt evil. Its ok. with a 9200 videocard, P4, etc. It should do ok. And down the road you could always upgrade to a better videocard, as thats the biggest bottleneck in most systems.

You can play almost any game with a good videocard and any 2Ghz CPU. Though Pentiums & Athlons are better than Celerons.

Next month there should be some good bargains with X800's and 6800's hitting the market. I know there are tons of power users (abusers) like myself that are going to be upgrading just for the hell of it and selling their 5900, 9800, 9700's, etc.
