    Re: Enterprise NAS Systems

I assume you use the SANs for VMWare storage? Also don't forget I am looking for a NAS not a SAN although I have always wanted fibre channel storage

infact thinking about it, most decent NAS devices these days have iSCSI, you can mix multi RAID configs and have LUN masking so its starting really get quite muddy between SAN and NAS.

Also can you resize a LUN these days or are they still none dynamic?

Yep- but also for anything requiring additional storage - there is only so much you can fit on a blade. ( Exchange , SQL , Backup to Disk ) After a heaviy investment in Fibre , it woudl seem unwise to junk it all in favour of iSCSI , but there is a good argument for NFS volumes for shared storage. Both Netapp & EMC have some good file level options available , that'll scale to pretty large volumes.

as for Lun re-sizing , thats down to the vendor usually but most of the ones I've delt with allow expand & shrinking.

Absolutely, however for new SAN setups, the arguments for iSCSI are getting stronger whilst the arguments for Fibre channel are getting weaker. IMHO we are rapidly approaching the point where only very special situations for new deployments justify the extra expense of Fibre channel.

the big players do seem to be moving towards a converged fabric at aroudnd 10Gbit given that some shops dont stress 1Gbit yet - it should leave room for expansion. Fibre is probably more secure than Cat5 - but as you say applications where that level of paranoia is required are slim.

Looking at Windows Storage Server and it looks pretty decent, we do alot of backups off site and pay per MB, Windows Storage Server should save us a bit of cost there while still giving us a good central store for our Data.

    16TB should do I think

Well I'll put it to the boss anyway.
The NX300 is decent for a basic Windows storage system, based on the R410 chassis, got one humming away here for office network drives, it manages well with 4x 1TB SATA drives in a R5.

Got an Equalogic unit arriving soon, I'll report in if you're interested.

Please do, we will be looking at a clustered SQL setup with a decent SAN so I would love to know.
