    Question dead pc!

Today I got a new HD (Maxtor Diamondmax plus 9 160gb) for my rig (2500 athlon/nf7/512 pc2700), and to start with bunged it in as a secondary drive to make a partition on windows (no floppy drive ) before installing. This went smoothly, and so I set the new drive as primary so that i could install windows on the new partition.

However, once I had set the jumpers and jiggled the cables sufficiently, the computer failed to power on. The red LED on the nf7 is illuninated when it's plugged in, but when the power button is pressed, no joy. I have jigged about with everything, taking out bits 1 by 1 to try to eliminate the problem, and it still happens. The only common denominator to the failures is the motherboard, which leads me to think that it's buggered.

Before I shell out money I dont have on another motherboard, do you have any ideas for me to try to maybe sort it out?

have you tried it with all ide cables disconnected just cpu ram and video ,and also outside of the case?

have you inspected it for damage ,tis very easy to knock bits off when fiddling in side the case

even if the board is dead surely it is under a year old and thus under warranty?

i've disconnected everything from the mobo except the essentials (ie cpu/ram/vid), and get the problem still. I dont think i've knocked any bits off either, tho i'll have to check that tomorrow.

    Could be power supply??
WHen I built the wifes PC, I couldnt get it to power up properly. Light would come on but that was about it. Traced it to the main power on/off button. It had moved back in its holder. Could be worth checking

the psu was my initial thought, so i tried a different psu, and had the same problem. also, i tried my psu in another box, and it worked then. also, i've shorted the pins for the power switch on the mobo, to see if it is the switch. it isnt
