Another point i raised in the last thread which was in a similar fashion to this is that I would want to buy games, even if they do cost more than a PC equivalent also 'helped' by a general choice of more 'AAA' games being released on console. Of course, there is also the second hand market on consoles as well which is virtually doesn't exist on PC, reducing game cost.
But once you factor in things like Steam the price difference between console and PC games widens even further. Also not all PC games have restrictions on being bought second-hand. On top of this many people I know don't bother to sell their console games but keep them. The secondhand market for even console games is not going to last. Games companies are trying to restrict this for all platforms as it is eating into profit margins especially when games are costing more and more to make.

But this thread is being derailed though.

This thread is not about people who are existing console gamers though it is about PC gamers moving over to consoles as I clearly stated in the OP. It is not about trying to tempt console gamers onto PCs.

The whole point is that PC gaming is not expensive. It is the perceived expense of PC gaming which does push many people towards consoles from PCs.

Anyway since you think PC gaming is dead can I have your GTX460 so I can play my B grade PC titles?

No wonder PC gaming is supposed to be dying when even PC enthusiasts are ready to sign its death warrant.

Not once did i indicate PC gaming is dead, hence my reasonably good system.

I've only ever tried to put the console argument across for people who may be interested in either a gaming PC or console as i knew that was the aim of the thread.

Yes there is an argument that building a gaming PC isn't as dear as perceived but at the same time it is expensive either with an initial outlay of the base system of ~£500 or the odd upgrade here and there. On the shop floor you can either get a console for little over £200 or a PC at nearly twice the price which for the most part plays the same games. At that point it is dearer.

however, I'll stop derailing your thread.

I already did the cost break-down. There is virtually no difference in cost.

Re: Minimum cost gaming PC sticky?

I believe this is pretty pointless to make an other PC vs console gaming argument...even in relation of the cost...

the two things are marketed for different people.

I feel that consoles are for gamers seeking for less challenge, they sort of need something like watching TV but a little bit more interactive. on the other hand PC games had/have more depth, in terms of story, difficulty, etc.

The sad thing is that I see now that this "dumb entertainment" gets into PC circles more and more. seriously, I do not need a sign to appear and tell me to push a button or a combination of them at a specific point to advance in the game, or have auto aim in almost every shooter.

following this logic, building a PC requires some thought and planning....console folks dont need this hassle...they want to buy "the box" put the disc in and have some fun, the cost is completely irrelevant and most of them wouldn't bother with PCs even if they were cheaper.

IS THIS TOO HARD TO COMPREHEND??

I don't know any former PC game who would swap for that reason though

Re: Minimum cost gaming PC sticky?

It would be useful in all aspects, people can use it as a guideline for specing a system. We can have price brackets for different uses or for people who want to spend more or less. In the end a sticky should be made it would be very handy.

Re: Minimum cost gaming PC sticky?

great idea cat, havent been able to look through the whole thread so sorry if i suggest something similar.

As for getting the cheapest gaming pc, i suggest doing an AMD and intel sided build... because you can get say an e5400 which is still a pretty solid cheap chip for <£50 but then you can also get an amd phenom x2 5000( i think this is right) for around the same but you have the chance of unlocking to a x3 or x4.

You can spec a gaming pc for around £300-£350, thats including a 756mb 460!!

Shall we get started then guys?

    CPU: e5400 or something?
    GPU: gt 450/ hd 5770 / 756mb gtx 460
    Motherboard: not a clue!
Ram: DDR2/3 what ever really, suppose cheap ddr3 from 7day 4gb for £30 if bought at the same time! DDR2 for ~£55 for 4gb
    PSU:Corsair CX400 or something around this wattage/price ~£35-£40
Case: the casecom one from ebuyer ~£25, or maybe a CM £30 one?
Dvd drive: Any cheapy samsung ~£10
    HDD: 500gb/1TB Samsung F3 ~£30/£45

PS: consoles suck, pc owns.. thats settled it , comming from someone whose had 3 xbox 360s (sold/bought at different times after convincing) and a Wii, and a ps1/xbox1 !

    Now the debates finished

Re: Minimum cost gaming PC sticky?

We will need to include the price of an OS in the build. I listed a build in post 23 which came to around £500. However,we should try to do one for less too. The Intel and AMD idea is a good one as AMD stuff can be harder to get hold off for some people. Also the same goes with the graphics cards too - there should be an AMD card and an Nvidia alternative.

If we start this sticky it will need to be updated every month or so.

We could set the two price points at around £400 and £500.

Like I mentioned before the builds should primarily judged by stock performance.

For overclocking we could detail the additional cost of the required parts and the expected performance increase too.

DDR2 builds should be avoided as it isn't forward looking and as far as i know, cost more.

Aria do 4GB of some Mushkin flavour 1333Mhz/9-9-9-24 for £35.

Re: Minimum cost gaming PC sticky?

curious, would this motherboard be alright?
    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/asus-...x-on-board-vga

Its Matx so a small case could be used aswell! Also if you paired that with the e5500 £48 @ scan(£1 cheaper than 5400 lol) then for a total of £81 compared to the ~ £117 of the AMD x3 Build, its easily the better extreme budget choice . You could use the extra money to spend it on a £35 bluray drive as i recall a bluray drive being an argument to why ps3 is better... haha, shame the graphics on pc games kick ps3/xbox ass even though if they are ported, compare cod MW1 on pc to 360, looks terrible imo.

TBH I think the mATX idea is a great one, it keeps it compact like it's console counterpart.

Its Matx so a small case could be used aswell! Also if you paired that with the e5500 £48 @ scan(£1 cheaper than 5400 lol) then for a total of £81 compared to the ~ £117 of the AMD x3 Build, its easily the better extreme budget choice . The Athlon II X3 seems to be quite a bit faster to just faster in general depending on the game, possibility of getting a X4 out of it as well.

I didn't say Blu-Ray made it better, in fact i never said consoles were better, but that given that its a key feature of console X it should be included.

for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

Re: Minimum cost gaming PC sticky?

The motherboard looks like it would do the job. It should make the Intel build slightly cheaper than an AMD Athlon II X2 build.

However,Scan does have postage charges which need to be considered too.

Ebuyer does seem to be quite competitive on price:

    Edit!!

The single user review of the motherboard on Ebuyer says there was some issue the motheboard had with Windows 7 64 bit.
