The system seems very nice indeed

Thermal paste shouldnt go off, if it is more dry than liquid then it prolly isnt too good, best to go buy some new stuff.

    Looking good
Don't know about the thermal paste issue, I assume if you just remove the dried out top layer the stuff should be ok.

Thermal paste doesnt really dry out, many times I have reused the paste of the bottom of my heatsink (after its been cooling a cpu at 50c for 2 months) and it still works fine. I only did it becuase I cba to find the tube of paste, so easy to lose them...
System seems good, I cant think of any known problems to warn you about anyway

and remember... you need a v.thin layer of paste on the cpu core, it's only meant to fill microscopic gaps between the core and heatsink surface. Get it as thin as you can without revealing the cpu core beneath.

This provokes a question that's been buggin me... Everyone talks of thermal paste, so I'm wondering if this would be recommended above the standard cooling supplied with the chip? I have retail AMD with cooling, but am now wondering wether to bin heatsink and fan and get the kit you guys rave about?

    TIA

*edit* I'm gettin paranoid now, every time I post the thread dies *edit*

Stock heatsinks are ok if you're not overclocking. However I, and everyone else no doubt, will advise you to go for the best heatsink/fan if you want to yield the lowest temps when overclocking. And as for the best coolers, everyone has their fave & it always sparks a lively debate. Personally i'd go for a Thermalright and some new Arctic Silver paste, but your stock cooler'll do you for the time being.

While I originally had no plans to OC, I think the 'Hexus Effect' is gonna rub off on me. So i guess better sooner than later.
