well i reckon if i get a 9800pro then my system will last me until early next year, so ill prob have a look at the 939 situation then.
I just get tempted easily reading magazines and Hexus

AMD has dual-core planned for next year I've heard.. but first it will be Opteron. They wanna make the 4-way machines 8-ways Believe they are thinking of moving into dual-core for desktop aswell.. but my guess is that is earliest late next year. And I know no dual cores will be in socket 754/939/940. A whole new socket is required for those beasts...
It looks like 754 has seen its last CPU now. 939 is the future of AMDs desktop, and must say it looks pretty good...
Light travels faster than sound. Is this why some people appear bright until you hear them speak?
Supposedly socket 900 (not 754, 939, or 940) will be for dual cores, but I haven seen anything offical yet.
I'd wait for socket 939 as the differences are a lot better in the newer range of A64 processors.
Most the 939 processors have a 128 bit memory controller instead of a 64 bit memory controller as found in the socket 754 chips, BUT the socket 754 have 1 Mb of cache whereas the 939 have 512 kb of cache.
The 939 chips all have the hypertransport running @ 2000 mhz whereas the 754 are running at 1600 Mhz and everyone knows fsb increases are good
Now heres the hard choice - does one get a 3700+ or a 3800+ when they are available ?
3700+ = 1 Mb cache, 2.4 Ghz on socket 754 whereas the 3800+ is 512kb cache, 2.4 Ghz on the 939 socket....
I think I'll go for a lie down, all these numbers etc are too taxing at this time of the morning
Well, unless your seriously rich then you could go out and get the Socket 939 A64 FX then you'd have it all, 1mb if cache and 128bit memory.Originally Posted by WildmonkeyUK

Sorry, phrased wrong, are the socket 939's out and are there many boards that support them?
At the moment the 939's are being shown at tiapei
We're currently adding all the new 939 processors to the website and updating all the information for them. As yet we do not have a guideline pricing from AMD, but as soon as we do - they will be updated to reflect this.
All in all I reckon about 2-3 weeks until they are all in stock
Hmmm, sounds good. I'm not sure whether i should get one as soon as they come out or wait until the end of the summer to get one (there would be better support for them then, mobos etc) trouble is, i hate waiting!
Also, will socket 939 take standard DDR?
Yes, 939 will take standard unbuffered DDR, thats the primary reason for making it. However, 939 is a rippoff right now and will continue to be for a while I suspect, but if you can afford it...
Thats good, what FSB does A64 have because I was saving up for some PC4000 from Corsair but if i'm upgrading to A64 later this year I wanna know if i'll need it
Technically they don't have an FSB. The FSB is the bus speed from CPU to memory - but the memory controller is on the CPU...Originally Posted by r1zeek
Am I right in thinking the newer ones will have 2000mhz hyper transport?
Athlon 64s don't have a FSB as it's commonly defined, memory speed is devided down from the full CPU speed. Offically it supports up to DDR400 (PC3200) memory. However If you have a baord with an agp/pci lock and multiplyer control you could go well beyond the limits of any DDR out. On my AK89 MAX I'm only lmited by clockgen, 500x4 runs fine (with pc4000 and mem set to ddr200 (2/1)), now if I could only find some DDR1000 (PC8000)...
Yes socket 939 has 1000x2 (2000 MHz) hyper transport. It's quite worthless atm however. The NF3 150s only have 600/1200MHz HT, it's also at half bandwidth upstream (8-bits vs. 16-bits), and yet the perfromance decrease is extreemly small.

Ohh yeah, they do away with the northbridge kinda don't they?
So you think i still should get PC4000 corsair or stick with DDR400?
Cheers
