    First time Build

Firstly apologies if these questions have been asked before.

It's about time I retired my P3 550 so I have decided to build a new one of my own. The thing is my only experience inside a pc is installing a stick of RAM. How difficult is it to build a pc? And what if anything are the disadvantages in buying the OEM version of Windows XP.

    Thankyou

Erm, if I remember correctly you have to buy the OEM version of WinXP with major hardware, which is no problem if you're buying PC bits as well.

If you want to know about building a PC, you've certainly come to the right place! Computers are a LOT easier to build than they were say five years ago. Most things set themselves up - a lot less fiddling with jumpers, and it's a lot harder to plug things in to the wrong place or the wrong way around.

The only big troubles are deciding what to get and knowing what goes best together. There's certainly plenty of people here who know what goes well together!

So, what do you want from your system, and what is your budget?

building a pc is easy and complicated at the same time, the actually construction is pretty basoc, everything can only go in the 1 place really. the setup is where it can get tricky. Were here to help however.

I usually test the system with just the CPU, RAM and graphics in, that way if anything blows up nothing else is plugged in that can die. Anyway, there's plenty of time to discuss details like that...

Yes, check the system outside of the case first to see if it'll boot up before whacking the lot into the case.

Plus, some case are a little smaller, so you might need to put the mobo in first before putting any optical drives into the case, but make sure all the jumpers are set before putting into the case.

    The spec and cost

The pc will be used for web surfing, picture editing etc but mainly for gaming.
I would like it to be as future friendly as possible. So I have short listed thse components which I hope will fill the above requirments.

    AMD64 3800 (939 pin)
    ASUS A8V DELUXE
    GAINWARD FX6800 ULTRA
CREATIVE SOUND BLASTER AUDIGY 2 ZS
    CREATIVE T7700
    CORSAIR TWINX XL 1GB
    ANTEC P160
ANTEC 480W OR TAGAN 480W PSU
    120 GB HARD DRIVE
    SONY DVD ROM
    ASUS DRW-0804P

This is the core of my build. I will get most of the parts from scan computers. I will order the them when there are large amount of them in the Today only section the Sony optical drives, Asus motherboard and Maxtor harddrives are on there this weekend. Doing this hopefully should save a bit of cash.
    Thank's for all the replies

Nice machine spec there, any reason for the dvd + dvdrw ?

Personally I have and NEC2500a (like most ppl here I think) and use daemon tools for a "virtual drive" saves money and space.
