I don't think PCI-E is going to make a any difference to performance over AGP so x800xt or nvidia 6800GT/ultra on an AGP will not suffer. These cards have 256MB of RAM so thay ain't going to need to transfer data over the AGP or PCI-E bus and even if they do PCI-E is just way slow compared to the onboard RAM and will cripple the performance. With a £2000 budget you can afford a few luxury items and what other new technology will give you a 100%+ performance boost now. The new cards are the perfect match if you have decided to go the TFT route since you are going to want to ensure that you can run all the latest games at the native resolution and your going to want 4xAA and 8xAF turned on and a 9800pro just won't do that.

The system won't overclock much so with £2000 to spend I would get one of the faster CPU's. I would tend to agree that there isn't much point buying premium RAM so money saved here could be spent on the CPU.

wasnt suggesting that pci-e was any faster at the moment - it's not. just mean that in a year mobos wont even have an AGP slot, so if was to upgrade his mobo to get ddr 2 / new cpu, that nice G-card would have to be replaced... I'd rather replace a £125 9800 rather than a £325 x800.

If the good man decides he's gonna get the best pc he can right now and just replace the whole thing in 3 years... then i agree - a srubbishrubbishrubbishrubbishy x800xt will would be exactly what he wants.

Will the next generation of ATi cards still support AGP? Or is the X800 the final one?
