    Question Live Music recording?

    Hi All,
Im looking to buy a device (ipod addon or a new mp3 player with direct encoding) for recording music at gigs + external mic.

Any suggestions ? Preferably Im looking at player/recorders that use SD memory.

If anyone hase suggestions to what other type of devices I could use I'll take them as well

    Thanks
    AJ

I have only seen MP3 players with Voice recorders. That wouldn't be great quality but you could atleast capture something, even though it would be rubbish. If you don't need good quality sound then something like the XClef HD-800 has 20Gb, direct encoding and a voice recorder. That would set you back £230 though. the WeWa WMP6803FM Rigidity also has voice recording and direct encoding and costs £80.
    Hope that helps mate

As far as it goes - MD is probably better off than MP3, as its gonna be alot cheaper.

Mic wise - how much do you have to spend Your best bet is probably the Shure SM57, http://www.shure.com/microphones/models/sm57.asp its THE well known mic

It also depends on the loudness and type of music - that mic'll be good overall upto quite high pressures, although if you want better quality with lower levels (and want to spend a little more) a good Newmann Condensor mic would be brill - U68 IIRC (not THE mic, one of the cheaper ones). Also depends alot where its going Is this going to be a discreet recording at a rock concert - which means probably a high quality lapele mic is your best bet, if your wanting to record something your actually in - ask the sound guys for a set of Master sends, or even Aux sends with the same mix then take them and a recording from a mic and you'll be able to create a great quality recording.

Last live recording I did - I took four channels. The stereo masters from the desk, then used two of those good AKG (I forget the model number) which I duct taped to the lighting rig just behind the last row of seats which I could mix in for atmosphere ... the end mix sounded good. (I recorded straight into a PC using the mAudio Delta44/44).
