    Thermal grease or paste?

I brought a small toothpaste tube of thermal Greece from my local computer shop to fit my new heatsink fan. I have always used the free pack of thermal paste that comes with a cpu or heatsink, which is better?

I wouldn't use either of them, instead get some nice arctic silver 5 or ceramique.

Yep, Arctic Silver 5 is the best but the stock stuff will do the job if you're not overclocking.

just enough to cover the cpu core, a blob about the size of a rice grain is plenty and then smooth it over the core with an old store card or something

yes you dont have to be a plasterer to get this job done, as said a small blob will suffice

Its amazing how many people I see who can go thru a syring of AS3 or 5 within a few CPUs

You can use the default stuff if you want I have a Zalman cooler on my P4 and an arctic cooler on my Radeon 9800 overclocked at 468/370mhz core and memory and the system runs at 24degress for system, 45 degress for P4 and 48degrees at full o/c load on the radeon so it works fine as a rule. Arctic silver si the best and I have some but Ive never found the default stuff in the packs to be bad even for overclocking.

its a shame really the AMD chips still dont carry the codes on the die anymore because as aa rule of thumb I used to apply AS2 or 3 until the codes were slightly visble

Yep depth of paste is soemthing Im still figuring out, I cover the chip until all you can see is white but its as thin as I can make it, too think and when you clamp down the cooler onto the chip the little bit of paste there squirts out the side and you have uneven coverage resulting in higher temps, so id go with cover completely and any excess will be squeezed off byt he pressure of the cooler being clamped down onto the chip. But it would be nice if there was some sort of guide
