    The IDE cables in shuttles…

Ok you get the long one that goes around the outside of the shuttle that has ‘2’ connections the other end, the manual says that’s for IDE port 2 and is used for the cdrom. You then get a short standard style IDE cable that should go in IDE port 1 and is used for the hard drive, this only has one connection so obviously I want to swap the cables around… are there any probs in doing this? They are both standard cables?

There shouldn't be a problem but why would you want to swap them?

Mount IDE1 as master and it is possible to connect the longer IDE cable to the optical drive AND the 2nd hard drive, with a little persuasion.

Its no different than if you had the hard drives on the same channel.

Simply set the jumpers so that the HDD is the primary and the optical drive the slave.

yes, but i would have thought the 2nd hard drive would have been slowed down when connected on the same cable as the 1st hard drive as well.

ok... i see what you guys are saying, it was my understanding that if you had 2 hard drives on the same cable they would run at whatever the lowest speed is.. mine are both 7200rpm... so that is that.

on running the 2nd disk drive on the second chanel and slaving the cdrom, i thought it would slow the drive down also? but i don't know either!

If you put a hard drive on the same IDE channel as a CD-ROM drive it will slow down yes. The hard drive will only transfer data at the same speed as the CD drive which is why we always put hard drives on the same channel, because they're more likely to operate at the same speed. You could change the IDE cables over perhaps? Put the one using the CD drive onto the hard drive and vice versa.

Basically, 1st IDE channel = primary hard drive, slave hard drive and the 2nd IDE channel = other drives

thanks kezzer, thats what i thought, i think i have a spare cable at home, the long cdrom one, is in place now and the short one won't reach if it's in ide port 2..

the shuttle is running great... just doing my windows updates now!

I can't give you rep, it says i need to give other people rep first. I think i've given you too much in the past? I'm not sure.

Yeh well like i said, just get the shuttle up and running with one hard drive first. There's no point in getting the other hard drive in until you know it's all fine.

Also, when you do put the second hard drive in, remember the very last connector on the IDE cable is primary and the one in the middle is secondary also remember to check the jumper settings on the hard drive (i presume since you use it already as a secondary hard drive this is done already)

    Just making sure

I've give you feedback on user rating thingy mebob.

I've never had problems with the USB and i used it for my headset, transferring files to my zen and getting photos of a digicam. There's a copy of nero in the little box i think. The stealthed drive does sit flush with the rest of it if you position the caddy correctly as well
